Phunware is looking for a Data Scientist who is passionate about using data to help our customers build mobile audiences and personalize the user experience so it is always contextual, relevant and engaging. You will analyze and model mobile data from across the Phunware platform.   You will build machine learning models and algorithms to create custom audiences and context aware user profiles but that’s only the beginning.

We are looking for a true renaissance data scientist who is both machine learning expert and engineer, but is also comfortable wearing the hat of statistician or data analyst when required. The ideal candidate has a passion for solving hard problems and understanding & extracting human behavior from the patterns and signals gleaned from the digital traces left by our mobile devices.

** Applicants must CURRENTLY hold a PHD or MS in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, a related field, or 3+ years of relevant experience as a Data Scientist in a business environment **

Responsibilities: 

• Mine data to prototype models for building products for targeting and personalization
• Collaborate with other engineers, product managers and business stakeholders
• Work with big data engineers and other stakeholders to enable automation of queries for production systems
• Design scalable algorithms utilizing large amounts of data for powering data driven products
• Use data mining skills, machine learning and predictive modeling techniques to design and develop products and features that drive engagement, retention, and monetization
• Assist in driving the product roadmap by identifying opportunities in our data

Qualifications: 

• Currently hold a PHD or MS in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field
• 3+ years of experience as a Data Scientist
• Proficiency with distributed computing and large-scale data
• Can do small data modeling work: Python, R, Julia, Octave
• Can do big data modeling work: Hadoop, Hive, Impala, Pig, Scala, MapReduce, Spark
• Can fish for data: SQL, Unix skills, Perl, Python, or other languages.
• Knowledge of numerical and statistical packages like Pandas, Numpy, Sklearn & R
• Hands on coding skills in: SQL, bash, perl, python or other languages to do your own data analysis
• Can communicate concisely and persuasively with engineers, product managers & product marketers 

Desirable:

• Experience working with mobile applications, mobile advertising or digital advertising data
• Experience working in a fast-paced, high tech environment (preferably software development)
• Demonstrated experience incubating and commercializing new ideas, working closely with technical teams from concept generation through implementation
• Familiarity with Tableau
