Civitas Learning is bringing together the best of new technology, design thinking, and data science in our mission to help one million more students graduate each year. We are building a data platform and cloud-based applications to deliver insights and action analytics to the frontlines of education. We are looking for insanely talented people who want to jump in and roll up their sleeves with us to make it all happen, and do their best work of their careers.

Improving student outcomes is our mission. An important strategy in achieving that mission is making the most of the world’s learning data to (1) better understand student success opportunities, (2) communicate such prescriptive insights to our partners through products and services so they are inspired to take actions to improve student success, and (3) finally measure outcomes to turn everyone into a student success scientist.

As a Director of Data Science (DS), you will work collaboratively with Product, Engineering, and Partner Success teams to enable our partners to improve student success outcomes while solving Partner business problems hands on and with the members of the data science team.

Responsibilities:

  • Collaboration with Product Management and Engineering to inform the product and platform technology roadmaps.

  • Conversion of DS ideas and prototypes into new SaaS products or new functionalities in existing products.

  • Identification of common problems and areas for standardization and automation in our research and production DS platform.

  • Advancement of key data science technologies and their implementations in the areas of various event-based ETL/feature/machine learning algorithms in a cost-effective, scalable manner.

  • Adoption of tools and emerging technologies to reduce custom development while ironing out trade-off issues between simplicity and intentional complexity in solving relevant business problems.

  • Operational management in prioritizing and coordinating DS activities within the DS team and across cross-functional teams.

  • Decomposing complex problems into a set of connected simpler tasks and milestones to help set the expectations of internal and external stakeholders.

  • Collaboration across multiple teams who bring different, yet complementary views to solving business problems.

  • Professional and technical mentoring and providing guidance to an energetic team of data scientists and analysts.

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree or higher in engineering, computer science, and/or quantitative science is prefered.

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in relevant fields in high-tech or related industries.

  • Strong hands-on implementation skills in a SaaS environment, especially in Python, Spark, Scala, SQL, Java, or R (within streaming ML applications in Kafka would be ideal).

  • Deep understanding of nuances of working through platform migration.

  • Strong analytical and machine learning skills and the ability to apply them to the interpretation of higher education data.

  • Relevant experience with and application of data science concepts to analysis of learning data.

  • Strong ability to manage, mentor, and grow team members while providing operational excellence and leadership in nurturing talent and professional growth.

  • A relentless pursuit of both quality and usability while maximizing application capabilities with the fewest number of components and technologies.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work with a diverse team, marching towards fulfilling the company’s mission of helping one million more students to graduate.
