RigUp is seeking a driven Director of Design to lead our Design team. If you have a strong desire to experiment and push the boundaries of user-centered design practices, we’d love to hear from you. As the Director of the Design team, you will have the opportunity to partner with executive leaders to shape product strategy and business objectives as a thought leader at RigUp. You will represent design both inside and outside the company to ensure communication and collaboration. Our ideal candidate empowers other designers to lead, has a flexible view on design processes to encourage innovation, and, most of all, sees the immense opportunity in front of RigUp to transform the world's most foundational industry through technology.

What You’ll Do

Creative Leadership

Establish design mission and strategy in alignment with the company’s guiding north star. Communicate this vision internally to stakeholders at all levels.

Lead design to excellence in practice, production and execution with attention to corporate and functional strategies as well as design vision. Maintaining a “fail fast” approach to design that also upholds a high standard of quality.

Ensure functional teams are constantly aligned to customer needs through proactive and preemptive engagement, UX research, testing and solution validation.

Build design culture that encourages innovation while balancing the need for optimization.

Managerial Leadership

Manage direct reports responsible for functional teams. Empower these designers to establish a voice and position internally as leaders.

Mentor and grow a team of world-class design talent.

Drive a framework to ensure career progression and development paths for designers. 

Foster trust within the team that supports team members to try and adopt new tools, technology and processes.

Proactively identify and resolve issues that may impair the team’s ability to meet goals.

Create a framework and provide resources that encourage inspiration, mentorship, education, collaboration and growth.

Operational Leadership

Establish a culture that always involves design early and often. Encourage cross-functional collaboration and communicate the impact of this practice for design. 

Organize teams that can provide design solutions effectively and with excellence across all departments.

Respect business requirements in conjunction with design goals.

Identify improvement opportunities within the scope of design and other teams functioning holistically.

Communicate value of design thinking and a customer-first approach to strategy across all areas of the business.

Establish metrics and measurable goals to ensure a visibility into design’s impact to business.

Partner closely with leaders in engineering, product, sales, marketing and others to constantly improve on communication and efficiency practices.

Bachelor's or advanced degree in appropriate field, such as Design or HCI.

A demonstrated fluency in brand, visual, and user experience design.

15+ years relevant design and UX experience with a solid understanding of design methods, tools and processes & 10+ years experience in design leadership or management function with a track record of hiring & developing high-performing design teams.

Experience and expertise in high-level product and marketing strategy.

Able to guide others through ambiguity, coach them to articulate a point of view and identify the path to a high-quality end result.

Sharp presentation skills, including executive presentations and public speaking at events, etc.

Objective and leveled facilitation skills, able to make tough decisions with others and effectively align teams to your rationale.

Willingness for occasional travel to your people that are located across all four of our offices

You’d be a great fit if you have:

3+ years experience in a similar role, 5+ years experience in design leadership of a highly successful team

A demonstrated understanding of design through the lens of product, brand and research

10+ years relevant design and UX experience with a solid understanding of design practices, methods, philosophies and tools

Experience scaling a design team quickly

Experience identifying, sourcing and engaging candidates through creative and innovative sourcing approaches

In-house experience at a fast-paced tech company

Experience mentoring, coaching and helping designers identify a path to success

Expertise in high-level strategic work that blends product, business, and marketing needs
