In Platform, our mission is to provide Babylon Engineers with a global platform that has an unrivalled developer experience. These are exciting times - we provide tools and APIs to build the next generation of digital healthcare products at a pace that’s unprecedented in the healthcare industry. 

 

We are building a world class enterprise API platform for use by its developer community using a mix of best of breed solutions and custom development as required. Internal users will rely on the API platform to take a “Design First”, self service approach to creating API contracts using the latest API technologies such as GraphQL, OAS3 and JSON Schema which will then drive the rest of the process and toolchain to accelerate and automate the creation of mocking, testing, and documentation services for Babylon’s API estate. The goal is for developers to be able to rely on the Babylon API “platform aaS” to help them achieve their deliverables with minimum toil.


In addition, Babylon’s API “platform aaS” will deliver a collaborative governance framework for allowing all of the cross cutting teams to ensure that the APIs are consistent, secure, compliant, and performant throughout the API lifecycle.

 

We’re looking for an Engineer Manager with expertise, ambition, and passion for managing high performance engineering teams. 

 

As an Engineering Manager, you understand platform thinking, continuous integration, and test driven development. You will lead a team of highly skilled software engineers who are creating and evolving the platform that will let us rapidly engineer at scale. You are extremely ambitious about applying DevOps principles to your work across the full technology stack from infrastructure through APIs and Developer Portals.

 

In this role, you deeply understand how to continuously deliver and iterate on foundational platform software, as well as incrementally migrate software to a new platform. You will be comfortable leading teams through uncertainty, and know how to build, retain, manage, and train high performing teams that can build fast and aren’t afraid to make tough decisions. 

 

You will be responsible for creating a highly collaborative environment where team outcomes always come first.

 

While this is not primarily a hands-on role, we expect our engineering managers to be able to stay close to the codebase and engineering decisions, including by making occasional contributions.

WHERE YOUR EXPERTISE IS NEEDED

  • Lead 1-2 engineering teams to provide platforms that let us rapidly engineer at scale.
  • Coach and mentor engineers of all levels - create a learning environment that provides psychological safety and inclusivity and a high level of job satisfaction
  • Hire, retain and develop, and manage the performance of engineering talent
  • Deliver scalable customer orientated systems that align with the rest of the Engineering and Product organization
  • Ensure the teams follow rigorous engineering processes, appropriate for a regulated environment whilst remaining agile
  • Communicate with Business Owners, Product Managers, Stakeholders and other engineers on development progress.

ABOUT YOU

  • Up-to-date experience in management and mentorship of engineering personnel - and execution against project plans and delivery commitments
  • Comfortable with management of departmental resources, staffing, mentoring, and enhancing and maintaining a best-of-class engineering team
  • Strong problem solving and analytical mindset - with the ability to manage software engineering processes, especially in regulated environments
  • Experience leading team working with microservices in Java, Node, Ruby or similar. 
  • Experience leading team working with APIs ideally using GraphQL federation - as well as TypeScript, OIDC, Cloud native and Kubernetes.
  • Experience working with Cloud Engineering teams is a huge plus. 
  • Strong Domain Driven Design experience highly desirable.
