Principal Frontend Software Engineer

RetailMeNot has 15 engineers who specialize in web UI development and who will look to you for expertise and leadership. Their experience level ranges from recent college graduates to senior engineers with over a decade of frontend and backend web experience. You’ll play a role in shaping that team as it continues growing, both through mentorship as well as providing guidance to recruiting and hiring.
Along with the duties listed below one of the biggest projects that the RetailMeNot web teams are working on is the redevelopment of our front-end code using React. A big part of your duties would be to help define and implement our new architecture and code structure. This is a great opportunity to leverage your experience and impact the direction of our entire website.
Who You Are
- You have 8+ years of UI development
- You're an expert in React, Vue and/or Angular
- You have a Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent STEM field
- You enjoy building robust systems for delivering compelling user experiences
- You build experiences for users that span their many devices and intents
- You are an authority on user interface engineering to the greater Engineering team
- You lead and mentor amazingly talented and passionate front end engineers
- You have in-depth experience in a web user interface engineering role
- You have a thorough understanding of scripting in the DOM and the tradeoffs with frameworks
- You have experience building web applications, both frontend and backend
- You have experience in UI Engineer tooling and workflow (e.g. linting, build process)
- You have experience with a web stack (e.g., PHP, Node.js, Java)
- You have experience in an environment with test automation, continuous integration, change management, and configuration management
What You'll Do
- You'll collaborate with UI engineers who are trying to figure out the best way to implement a responsive new page on RetailMeNot’s site
- You'll collaborate with the Security team on evaluation and remediation of any risks affecting RMN’s site. Your browser expertise is critical here
- You'll read the latest Chrome and Firefox blogs and release notes
- You don't mind pulling down the JavaScript framework of the day and play with it for a few hours
- You'll spend an hour with a junior engineer helping them level up their JavaScript skills
- You'll code review an internal project prior to open source release
- You'll pull metrics from Google Analytics to inform our point of view on which old versions of Internet Explorer we can drop
- You'll review results from our in-house performance monitoring system and coordinate with developers to fix regressions and maintain site speed
- You'll meet a friend for coffee and pitch them on a UI engineering opportunity at RetailMeNot
RetailMeNot has teams working on various strategic initiatives and core engineering challenges. As Principal UI Engineer, you are expected to influence our projects and the people working on them. Projects include:
- Ongoing platform refactoring and modernization
- Speed improvements to stay ahead of competitors and provide a great user experience
- Richer location-aware content
- New types of coupons to appeal to an ever-growing user base
