This role is responsible for all software product development / delivery for a real-time system in a highly dynamic and challenging vehicle environment. He/she oversees the design, development, document, testing and fielding of complex real-time software systems relating to electrified and conventional powertrain systems. It is expected that the Vice President of Software & Controls develops technology roadmaps capturing future technology features and content. The Vice President of Software & Controls applies the appropriate standards, processes, procedures, and tools throughout the development life cycle. He/she supports the CTO, by managing all software engineering related budgets and schedules. The Vice President of Software & Controls also manages the software engineering portion of proposals for outsourced activities.

Essential Functions:

  • Apply automotive software development experience to ensure robust, seamless integration and certification of Hyliion products in targeted class 8 truck applications
  • Manage Hyliion’s broad software initiatives including back-end, front-end and core value algorithms for hybrid and fully electric products
  • Manage all user interface devices and associated software to ensure class leading products both functionally and aesthetically
  • Develop and validate diagnostics for Hyliion’s commercialized product suite
  • Develop prognostics product portfolio and roadmaps
  • Mange internal software engineering teams providing daily direction to individuals
  • Manage third party software engineering providers to ensure that out-sourced projects are on time and meet key product requirements
  • Develop Gantt charts to track and communicate project progress to executive team
  • Provide regular project updates to the Hyliion leadership team on project progress and roadblocks
  • Responsible for all software aspects of product certification
  • Support the creation of key APQP documents including FMEAs and DVP&Rs to drive product software reliability and robustness
  • Support problem resolution activities, assist in the facilitation of 8D workshops and the application of the methodologies
  • Actively mentor and coach engineering team members
  • Support the development of company technology roadmaps supported by extensive industry and product knowledge
  • Represent Hyliion and present technical papers at key industry conferences
  • Position will involve travel visiting engineering providers and hardware suppliers

Knowledge & Skills:

  • Understanding of ISO 26262 safety standards and vehicle safety systems, including certification process
  • Expert in J1939 and all communication and diagnostic protocols
  • Expert in Advanced driver-assistance systems (ADASand other in-vehicle system software / controls architectures
  • Knowledge of Battery System Software / Controls & BMS
  • Knowledge of cybersecurity and cloud software and systems for the delivery of real-time automotive system updates, commands, safety and information.
  • Command of MIL (Simulation), HIL (Testing), UI/UX, Diagnostics, and Prognostics
  • Expert in vehicle electrification systems including motors, motor controllers and battery systems and associated software
  • Expert in general class 8 vehicle software, controls and calibration
  • High volume manufacturing experience is a plus
  • Automotive industry and associated toolset expertise (FMEAs, DVP&Rs)

Education and Experience:

  • 15-20 year experience in automotive electrification environment
  • Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related programs with preference for an advanced degree.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to stand, sit, use of hands to handle, feel, or reach with hands and arms
  • Ability to lift and/ or move up to 25 pounds
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and distance vision

Work Environment:

  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
