The SR Controller, Property Accounting & Operations is responsible for managing the company’s property level and tenant accounting for a large portfolio of single-family residential assets, including oversight of local and off-shore finance and accounting functions, as well as accounting for related property services and operations business units. This individual will work with a team of 30+ accountants to ensure that the routine financial activity for each asset and tenant is recorded timely and accurately; however, the company anticipates significant growth in transaction volumes. As a result, a key initiative of this position is to build a highly efficient and scalable operating group through organizational improvements and increased use of technology to handle the increase in volume efficiently. Daily responsibilities will include problem solving, critical thinking, decision making and interpreting financial data to identify areas that can benefit from process improvements or efficiencies.

Job Functions

  • Lead a team of accountants recording routine monthly property level accounting transactions including property revenue and property operating expenses, as well as monthly operating activities for property services business units
  • Analyze monthly operating results to ensure accuracy of the amounts recorded; provide interpretation and analysis to internal and external customers based on this analysis
  • Maintain current accounting knowledge; research and provide GAAP interpretation and draft technical accounting memorandums regarding real estate operations accounting policies
  • Maintain internal control that ensures compliance with GAAP and applicable federal, state, and local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting
  • Coordinate with corporate financial reporting to complete the annual financial statement audits of various entities
  • Coordinate with tax preparers to ensure compliance with required tax basis tracking, reporting and estimates for governmental filings and other external requirements
  • Identify opportunities for scalable financial reporting process improvement and implement them where appropriate
  • Provide leadership, management, and training of staff and subordinates
  • Prioritize the function’s projects and manage customer deliverables and timelines while maintaining integrity, quality, and accuracy
  • Consistently assess the group’s staffing levels and overall department structure including on-shore and off-shore recruiting and hiring coupled with efficient use of technology
  • Provide ad hoc analysis, reporting and special projects as needed
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal colleagues and customers

Required Skills and Experience:

  • 10+ years of real estate (single-family residence space preferable) or mortgage loan industry and public accounting experience
  • Minimum 5 - 7 years in a management role
  • Proficient in GAAP, and knowledgeable in fair value reporting, investment and real estate accounting rules
  • Experience dealing with high volumes of transactions
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking skills with the ability to meet stringent deadlines
  • Detail-oriented executioner that is highly process and documentation driven
  • Proven track record for driving process efficiencies
  • Self-starter that possesses the ability to work well with ambiguity and/or minimal direction
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills
  • Successful track record in leading teams
  • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate and manage effectively
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions based on accurate and timely analyses
  • High level of integrity and dependability
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting or other related discipline
  • CPA is required
  • Highly proficient in MS office applications: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook
  • Knowledge of Yardi Voyager preferred
  • Strong willingness to use and leverage technology-based solutions that improve efficiency and scalability of processes
