The Role

Tesla is seeking a Sr. Vision Automation Engineer to be part of a world-class team of engineers that are responsible for designing and building the automated manufacturing equipment at Tesla factories.

As a Vision Automation Engineer, you are responsible for developing and deploying vision systems solutions for all cell manufacturing projects. This includes testing, installing, integrating, sustaining, auditing, and assessing systems. Vision Systems Engineers own equipment standards, hardware configuration, and management of vision projects. All equipment will be planned, assembled, and tested at our Tesla facility located in Austin, Texas.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, develop, integrate, and deploy machine vision, robot guidance, and vision-based process control systems into manufacturing lines
  • Participate in initial equipment conceptual development and carefully balance product specifications with process requirements, complexity, lead-time, and cost
  • Manage vendor vision systems and adapt them to Tesla standards
  • Lead vision system updates, upgrades, and replacements on all equipment in the cell organization
  • Train and equip sustaining engineering teams to support vision systems after deployment and in production environments

Requirements

  • Proficiency developing vision algorithms with common vision platforms: Cognex VPro, Keyence, SICK, Fanuc, Halcon, Matrox, OpenCV
  • Experience specifying the vision system hardware including cameras, lights, lenses, frame grabbers, displacement sensors, laser profilers
  • Experience developing vision applications using common languages such as VB, C++, C#, Python
  • Experience commissioning vision systems for 2D/3D quality inspection, robot guidance, and process control
  • Familiarity with industrial protocols such as Profinet, EthernetIP, EtherCAT
  • Familiarity creating design of experiments (DOEs) and test plans for manufacturing or controls processes
  • Strong written and communication skills
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or equivalent
  • At least 5+ years of relevant professional experience with vision systems and automation
