5 summer conferences Austin tech shouldn’t miss

With summer nearly upon us, it’s time to figure out how to spend it. We’re all about helping you get out and network in Austin tech, so here are five conferences to pencil in between vacations.

OSCON

OSCON is the original open source gathering, bringing together the software engineering and developer community to explore what’s new in open source languages, tools, and techniques. Sponsors include GitHub, New Relic and Stack Overflow.

Cost: $49 will get you into the expo hall, networking events and all the sponsored presentations.

When: May 18 and 19

SciPy 2016

The annual SciPy (Scientific Computing with Python) Conference brings together over 650 participants from industry, academia, and government to showcase their latest projects, learn from skilled users and developers, and collaborate on code development. The full program will consist of two days of tutorials (July 11–12), three days of talks (July 13–15), and two days of developer sprints (July 16–17).

Cost: Standard conference passes are $450 until 5/22, then the prices for each tier rise by $50.

When: July 11 through 17

38th ICSE (International Conference on Software Engineering)

A quarter-century after the Texas state capital first hosted ICSE, Austin has become a hub for technology, entrepreneurship, music, outdoor recreation and nightlife. ICSE is the premier conference in software engineering sponsored by ACM and IEEE CS. Join the top minds in software engineering research and practice for a week of inspirational talks, demos and conversation.

Cost: Registration prices range from $450 for student members through $1,200 for the rest of us.

When: May 14–22

Lone Star Software Symposium

No Fluff Just Stuff brings together the best developers, authors and trainers in the industry. Many of the speakers are the same developers who speak at international events such as JavaOne. NFJS provides access in a smaller, more relaxed setting.

This conference will focus on the latest technologies and best practices emerging in the Java / JVM software development space. Speakers are authors, consultants, open source developers, and recognized industry experts.

Cost: $1,075 or less if you register in a group. The bigger the group, the more you save.

When: July 8 through 10

Front Porch Conference

The schedule includes talks on front end testing of Node.js applications, React.js, serverless architecture with webhooks from diverse presenters active in Austin’s dev and design communities.
