The Opportunity

HomeAway is seeking a dynamic and highly experienced Finance Director to lead its Global Retail Finance group at the Domain in Austin,Texas. This leadership role is a part of the Global Commercial Finance organization and reports to the Sr. Director of Commercial Finance. Commercial Finance is an emerging team supporting our retail business organization, local markets, and global cost areas.

The Global Retail organization is charged with maximizing revenues through diligent investments which have most optimal return to the business. The commercial finance team leads and manages the global weekly trading meeting and top line pacing analysis, monthly business review of contribution margins, quarterly forecasting, and annual planning. The team is also responsible for identification and management of financial risks/opportunities, creation of commercial financial targets, and analysis to support financial trade offs across regions and lines of business for optimal return. This group supports global sales, pricing, and forecasting of supply and demand.

This leader will have accountability for driving the financial strategy for the global retail organization, executive partnering, and financial management of all America’s business units including the North America and Brazil vacation rental business, the property management software business, the media solutions business & BedandBreakfast.com.

The Role:

  • Provide leadership and oversight for a staff of seven people, four of which are direct reports. Become an invaluable partner to the Chief Commercial Officer and Sr. Director, Commercial Finance. Manage the team to meet deliverables while developing professional growth opportunities for team members.
  • Consolidate and synthesize the global retail story on a weekly and monthly basis, bringing a common lens to varying regions, surfacing global trends, and reporting on key metrics. This role will be the global hub for all things retail, identifying and trending key metrics, looking at regional contribution margins and trade off’s to drive optimal returns globally while still achieving strategic business objectives.
  • Set a clear tone for all aspects of retail financial guidance (annual planning, quarterly forecasting, monthly outlooks, weekly pacing) by working closely with regional finance leaders, their teams, functional leaders and business teams.
  • Support the team by providing conceptual and technical model-build advice that results in reliable, easy to audit and scalable financial models and projections. Drive efficiencies in the team by championing automation and process improvement both internally with the immediate team and Analytics and IT groups.

To be successful, the incumbent must be exceptionally strong in the following areas:

  • Comfortable with and demonstrated ability to thrive in a very fast paced environment and highly visible role where priorities are constantly shuffling, and speed without sacrificing data quality is the norm.
  • Exceptional people leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to manage and accelerate high potential talent as well as effectively develop or address under performers. This includes first and second line leadership management.
  • Exceptionally strong process and structure. This role must bring financial process and structure to the entire commercial finance organization during a time of significant business change. 
  • Executive presence is a must. The candidate must portray a strong executive presence and be very articulate (both verbally and in writing), concise, outspoken, yet respectful.
  • Exceptional at summarizing and then synthesizing large amounts of data (both quantitative and qualitative) into a distilled, executive level PowerPoint presentation. Prior consulting experience will be very valuable in this regard.

Other Qualifications:

  • Bachelors in Finance, Business, or Economics with 15 years of progressive, related experience. An M.B.A. is desired but not required.
  • Advanced modeling skills that span new “from scratch” initiatives as well as improving the efficiency and accuracy in existing models. Must be able to create models that incorporate currency uncertainty and complexity.
  • Strong critical thinking skills, with an innate sense of curiosity, that is complimented by an aptitude for learning quickly.
  • Solid experience with financials ERPS or other OLAP based financial planning software such as Hyperion, Prophix, Adaptive, Cognos or Clarity.
  • Track record of building solid partnerships with peers and executive level leaders. Ability to work effectively in team environments, particularly cross-functional teams, without sacrificing speed.
  • Solid time management and multi-tasking abilities. Must be “plan-ful” and proactive in approach, given the complex and worldwide nature of our organization.
  • Foundational understanding of US GAAP Accounting, particularly of revenue recognition.
