THE ROLE

Data is Babylon’s lifeblood, and is crucial to achieving our vision. Our Data Engineering function is on the forefront of this effort - this is not your average back office data engineering role. As a Babylon Data Engineer, you’ll be partnering with functions across the business. You’ll support application teams in designing and building event driven systems. You’ll partner with data scientists and researchers on how our AI is built, and how we understand a member’s health. You’ll work with teams building new ways of interconnecting health data, for immediate real time use as well as for extrapolation, and you’ll help define how our insight and analytics team interact with our data. 

As a Staff Data Engineer you’ll be a thought leader in your space, you’ll be at the cutting edge of streaming technologies and processes, and will act as a levelling up point for your team. We expect you to question everything and continually strive for excellence - leading through influence.

COOL PROJECTS WE ARE WORKING ON

-Our Health Graph is an active platform that grows as we learn more about our members. We've combined best of breed technology (Kafka & Elasticsearch), industry standards (FHIR), our own encoded knowledge base as well as a bunch of smart applications to create a fully normalized, active graph(QL) view of our members. As we learn, we also have agents that can infer new knowledge, or trigger new actions based on the changing profile of a member. While we've come a long way, we're nowhere near done. There are plenty of new challenges ahead.

-The way we handle our members' data says a great deal about who we are as a company. As such, we've taken a look at what the industry typically does in this space, and found it lacking. This is why we're investing in our Data Science and Analytics Platform, which provides tools for not only building ML models, but also provides a far more nuanced mechanism for data access, which we call Intent Based Views, which results in data only being access and used, based on the work currently being done, and only with the data needed to achieve the intended goal. 

-Underpinning our platform, we’re building a world class event streaming platform. But one that not only provides best of breed tools, and is a pleasure to use; but also features automated schema evolution, and feeds into an event driven data mesh.

-It's well known that medical data is a bit of a mess. Building a unified mechanism by which we can tame the myriad models of data into a single homogenized and fully understood view - as well as the transports and connections to external providers is the goal of our integration team. We're not building your old school integrations, but intelligent, adaptable components that abstract complexity from the Babylon internal systems. This is the Integrations Engine.

YOU

This is super rewarding critical work, we pride ourselves on excellence in this space, and we want the best to join us in it. Ideally, you’ll have a deep understanding of one or more:

-Distributed systems, Event Driven Architectures and Kafka

-Search Engines (Elasticsearch)

-3rd Party Data Integrations and API design and consumption

-Streaming SQL and Streaming Patterns

-Airflow / Beam / Flink and Spark

-Data Modelling

The good news is that you will get exposure to these items as a data engineer. You’re also probably a bit of a polyglot, with Python and Java being our bread and butter, but JS, Rust and Scala are all in use in our stack. 

As to quality, we’re a company that deals with our member’s health and as such we expect the highest discipline with regard to testing. Unit Tests, Integration and Acceptance. If it’s not tested, it doesn’t get deployed. You’ll understand how to write secure, scalable, and performant code for a cloud environment and be able to jam with our security architects on threat models. Your code is clean, maintainable, and readable - and you won’t be afraid of creating documentation where it’s needed. Running code is as important as writing it - you’ll know what to write in a runbook, and how to monitor and alert on what matters. You’ll be expected to join our on-call rota, after all, you’ll have written at least part of what runs.

You’ll be joining one of our teams, most likely cross functional, where you’ll find like minded folk who’ll help push you and give you a hand up where you need it. You’ll be part of both the planning and in the execution, and partake in many debates on the best approach to take.

We make time for experimentation, and are active in our communities. We want you to speak at conferences, and write articles.
