At Cloudflare, we have our eyes set on an ambitious goal: to help build a better Internet. Today the company runs one of the world’s largest networks that powers approximately 25 million Internet properties, for customers ranging from individual bloggers to SMBs to Fortune 500 companies. Cloudflare protects and accelerates any Internet application online without adding hardware, installing software, or changing a line of code. Internet properties powered by Cloudflare all have web traffic routed through its intelligent global network, which gets smarter with every request. As a result, they see significant improvement in performance and a decrease in spam and other attacks. Cloudflare was named to Entrepreneur Magazine’s Top Company Cultures list and ranked among the World’s Most Innovative Companies by Fast Company.

About the Department
Cloudflare’s Research Team embarks upon projects that help shape the future of the Internet at large, and the systems that drive it. We design, develop, and deploy these projects into Cloudflare systems to demonstrate their impact, and to share that knowledge with the wider standards and research communities -- often in collaboration with university or other industry labs. Engineers and Researchers in the Research Team investigate new ideas, build new technologies, inform and execute measurement practices, and even dive into existing codebases to make meaningful changes in production environments. Our current works focus on applied cryptography, privacy, network protocols and architecture, measurement and performance evaluation, and increasingly distributed systems. Team members work independently on greenfield projects, and collaborate closely with the Engineering organization to achieve common goals. A sample of our recent high-profile works include ODoH, CAP, ZKP for browsers, and IP de-coupling.

About the Role -
This role involves managing and supporting a team of passionate research engineers that are building innovative technology and conducting scientific research in technical areas such as networking, cryptography, Internet measurement, distributed systems, and privacy. For this role, we welcome expertise in any of the domains in which we work, but are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in distributed systems and storage.
As a manager, you’ll introduce tools and processes to make our researchers’ lives better. You will help guide the research and development of team projects, and be encouraged to identify and help articulate new ideas and technologies. As a subject area technical lead, you will also play an active part in shaping the research agenda based on what’s currently possible. A significant component of this role is to guide team members professional development, as well as supporting their projects’ integration into Cloudflare’s infrastructure so that the research can touch customer and client experiences alike, and help the company reach our ambitious goals.
You combine a passion for meeting strategic goals with building technically innovative solutions and excel at shifting between the two. You understand how big-picture goals inform technical details, and vice-versa. You thrive in a fast-paced iterative engineering environment and have experience in delivering scalable solutions as well as cutting-edge research -- ideally backed by a track-record of peer-review publications or standards contributions. Most importantly, you will have a history of having past teams respect you as both a technical leader and manager.

What Makes Cloudflare Special?
We’re not just a highly ambitious, large-scale technology company. We’re a highly ambitious, large-scale technology company with a soul. Fundamental to our mission to help build a better Internet is protecting the free and open Internet.
Project Galileo: We equip politically and artistically important organizations and journalists with powerful tools to defend themselves against attacks that would otherwise censor their work, technology already used by Cloudflare’s enterprise customers--at no cost.
Athenian Project: We created Athenian Project to ensure that state and local governments have the highest level of protection and reliability for free, so that their constituents have access to election information and voter registration.
Path Forward Partnership: Since 2016, we have partnered with Path Forward, a nonprofit organization, to create 16-week positions for mid-career professionals who want to get back to the workplace after taking time off to care for a child, parent, or loved one.
188.8.131.52: We released 184.108.40.206 to help fix the foundation of the Internet by building a faster, more secure and privacy-centric public DNS resolver. This is available publicly for everyone to use - it is the first consumer-focused service Cloudflare has ever released. Here’s the deal - we don’t store client IP addresses never, ever. We will continue to abide by our privacy commitment and ensure that no user data is sold to advertisers or used to target consumers.
Sound like something you’d like to be a part of? We’d love to hear from you!
