Atlassian can hire people in any country where we have a legal entity, assuming candidates have eligible working rights and a sufficient timezone overlap with their team. As our offices re-open, Atlassians can choose to work remotely or return to an office, unless it's necessary for the role to be performed in the office. Interviews and onboarding are conducted virtually, a part of being a distributed-first company.
Atlassian is looking for a highly motivated and talented engineer with hands-on experience designing and developing cloud-native applications to join our Identity Permissions team. You will get to build highly scalable, multi-region solutions using modern technologies.
Atlassian's Identity Platform is used by Atlassian cloud products and services to accurately verify who someone is (authentication) and determine what they have access to (authorization). The Identity Permissions team owns this authorization piece that controls a user's access to Atlassian products and services. You'll work as part of a rapidly growing high-energy team delivering creative and robust solutions for a wide array of challenging problems
What you'll do
As a software engineer, you will be part of a team of many talented engineers to design and implement the most innovative, scalable, and performant systems that are responsible for managing permissions and authorization decisions of all Atlassian Cloud Products. You will also frequently interact with other Identity teams, Product Managers, Designers, and Architects to build the Permissions platform encompassing backend development, monitoring, scaling, and optimizing to make the management of permissions simple and performant at scale.
No previous experience in the Identity domain is required. Candidates would benefit from previous experience developing and architecting micro-services.
On your first day, we'll expect you to have:

  • Significant experience as an engineer building large-scale distributed systems.
  • More than 4 years of experience building and developing backend applications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree with a preference for Computer Science degree
  • Experience developing and operating web applications in AWS, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud, or similar public cloud providers.
  • Proven experience across the board with a strong depth of knowledge in the following technologies: Java, Kotlin, Python or GoLang, or other programming languages.
  • Ability to design public APIs, coupled with a passion for writing clean code.
  • Experience building service from the ground up is preferred - from gathering requirements, design, build, deploy, and ownership.
  • Solid understanding of application performance and designing low latency, high-speed web applications.
  • Excellent prioritization and self-organizing skills.
  • Familiarity with Agile software development methodologies.
  • Have outstanding verbal and written communication skills. You will need to explain your proposals well enough that others understand their value.
  • Experience setting a very high bar for excellence across your engineering team and putting systems in place to measure against that bar.
  • Ability to work well in a team, have a positive attitude, patience, and humility.

It's great, but not required if you have:

  • Previous experience with authentication and authorization domain, technologies, and protocols.
  • Previous exposure to web application security (authentication, authorization, session management, access controls, etc.) and privacy standards (SOC2, GDPR, etc.).
  • Experience in Continuous Delivery and the DevOps mindset.
  • Experience in building applications using Golang/Kotlin on Cassandra/Aurora.
