In any healthcare system, analyses are performed and decisions are made that affect people’s lives; from predicting risk and understanding symptom presentations to determining the most appropriate clinical and lifestyle interventions for a patient. Artificial intelligence algorithms represent a leap forward in the quality and accessibility of healthcare by assisting and co-driving more personalised, technology-powered clinical decision making/support and population health management. At Babylon, our goal is to build the next generation of AI / machine learning algorithms and systems that will operate through digital healthcare platforms and products to deliver the highest standard of care for millions of our members globally.


To achieve that goal, in collaboration with other members of the Applied Sciences team, Research Engineers at Babylon, apply, support and contribute to cutting-edge research, leveraging data collected through our digital health platform and from subject-matter experts, as well as publicly available third-party data. This research contributes to the development and improvement of existing and future digital health products and services to support the health of our members globally.


We are looking for a highly motivated, technically adept Senior Research Engineer to join the Applied Sciences team, a multi-disciplinary team of AI research scientists & engineers, data scientists, epidemiologists & health economists, working in close collaboration with clinical, product and engineering teams to deliver healthcare products to improve the lives of millions globally.

WHAT YOU'LL WORK ON

  • Contributes to the development of AI solutions to address long-term business challenges.
  • Responsible for technical implementation, design and architecture of AI/ML features & services including proof-of-concepts, prototypes and research tooling.
  • Supports research and design of approaches, algorithms and models for AI/ML features/services.
  • Supports the co-creation of efficient, effective and reproducible experimental code, frameworks, environments and processes through the implementation of best modern engineering practices.
  • Runs scientific experiments and supports their design.
  • Efficiently works on this (as per the points above) with other stakeholders (including other members of the Applied Sciences team, clinicians, engineers, product managers, project managers and the regulatory team).
  • Guides research engineering conversations and helps supervise junior team members with their day-to-day tasks and activities.
  • Provides engineering and systems focussed mentoring to the wider Applied Science team.
  • Leads the transition of knowledge and assets to product engineering teams if/when a research project is destined for productionisation.
  • Representing the wider Applied Sciences team as stakeholders in other engineering related teams (e.g. MLOps, data engineering) - bridging the gap to the production engineering world.
  • Communicates impact of research and scientific concepts to non-technical audiences across the business.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

  • Strong mathematical ability to deeply understand state-of-the-art work.
  • Expert in Python, or/and other similar language(s).
  • Ability to optimise research code (e.g. implementing vectorisation or low-memory techniques).
  • Knowledge of developments in experimental platforms and frameworks from across the field.
  • Good organisational skills (including time and task management, and working efficiently as part of a team).
  • Good communication skills. Able to explain and articulate technical and scientific ideas in written and verbal formats (including presentations).
  • Masters degree (or equivalent knowledge and experience) in technical discipline, e.g. computer science, physics, maths, and 3+ years of engineering experience.
  • Relevant scientific research experience.
  • Experience with data science / ML libraries & frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, PyMC3, Pyro, Stan, scikit-learn, etc.)
  • Expertise with relevant skills for programming, including: use of version control systems; use of a ticket/project management system like JIRA; writing and use of tests.
  • Excellent knowledge of computer science and software engineering overall.
  • Broad knowledge of AI / ML, in particular of relevant AI/ML techniques and frameworks.
  • Able to communicate the impact of engineering, research and scientific concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Is compassionate and caring towards others. They respect the views and ideas of others

NICE TO HAVE

∙ Experience with development and deployment of production software.

∙ Experience of front-end / full-stack development (including for prototypes and demos).

∙ Experience with some of these areas:

➭ computer science subject e.g. programming language theory or/and ...

➭ software verification medicine/healthcare, in particular experience of applying AI/ML in healthcare settings

➭ probabilistic programming

➭ causality

➭ counterfactual inference

➭ Bayesian modelling and inference

∙ Expertise in one or several areas of ML/AI.

∙ Relevant publications in ML / AI / computer science, including conferences (such as NeurIPS, ICML and ICLR), journals and workshops.
