UI/ UX Design Intern

Smarter Sorting is poised for an exciting and critical phase of growth. We have created the product needed to make the circular economy possible working with some of the largest retailers on the planet, over 1,150 suppliers, including half of the top 10 consumer product manufacturers worldwide. Our software and data solution allows our customers to safely and properly handle their products to comply with state and federal regulations and enables them to make environmentally and socially conscious decisions. So far, we’ve enabled our customers to divert over 4.4 tons of waste from landfill, avoided 2.7 metric tons of greenhouse gas emission, donated over 5.7 million meals to those in need and we’re just getting started.
We are looking for a passionate and curious UI/UX Design Intern to shadow and assist the design and product teams as we grow our software capabilities across three digital products. The person we are looking for is excited to learn, not afraid to ask questions, and can dedicate 10-20 hours per week to various projects for at least five months.
What You'll Be Doing
- Observe and evaluate requirements on a project-by-project basis in collaboration with the UI/UX Designer and Product Owners
- Utilize traditional design thinking and iterative design methodologies to produce successful visual solutions for product features
- Observe and participate in user interviews, stakeholder interviews, workshops, and other forms of discovery
- Effectively communicate design and research goals
- Audit and maintain component libraries, and understand proper use for said components
Your Experience + Skills
To be successful in this role you will
- Have an understanding of visual design basic principles and best practices
- Possess a curious mind, and a collaborative spirit to work professionally within a team
- Have experience with design tools, in particular Figma, InDesign, and Illustrator
- Be able to empathize with and understand customer and user needs, motivations, and behaviors to inform project outcomes and deliverables
Additional Qualifications
- A digital portfolio of 2-3 examples of UI/UX/Product design work
- up to 2 years of experience as a UI/UX designer, interaction designer, visual designer (digital), or similar role
- Experience with design and prototyping tools (including Figma, Indesign, and Illustrator)
Additional Information
- This internship will last up to 5 months with the option to continue or move to full time depending on business need and individual performance.

- Compensation from $20-25 / hour and may vary based on experience
