Work Arrangement:
This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Warren, MI or Austin, TX three times per week, at minimum.
The Role:
The Cybersecurity Policy & Awareness Lead at GM plays a pivotal role in enhancing security measures within the organization. This position is part of the Cyber Risk Mitigation team which is dedicated to minimizing security risks within the GM environment. This involves a comprehensive approach of understanding root cause, identifying emerging trends, fostering cross-functional collaboration for actionable strategies, and determining the best approach for communicating and educating GM resources.
Join the GM team and play a crucial role in fortifying the organization's cybersecurity landscape. With the Cybersecurity Policy & Awareness Lead position, you have the opportunity to influence policies, champion change, and contribute to GM's unwavering commitment to security excellence.
What You'll Do:
Lead the development, review, and update GM's Information Security Policies to ensure alignment with industry best practices and regulatory requirements. This includes:

  • Collaborating with cross-functional teams (e.g., IT, Legal, HR) to gather input and ensure effective policy implementation.
  • Drafting clear, concise, and actionable policies that are easily understood by all employees.
  • Facilitating the review and approval process for new and revised policies according to established procedures.
  • Oversee the life cycle of information security policies, standards, procedures, and guidelines documents
  • Maintaining a comprehensive policy library and ensuring all policies are readily accessible an understood by diverse audiences
  • Drive opportunities to streamline policy and awareness of policy by leveraging AI technology


Evaluate requests for policy deviations or risk acceptance. This includes:

  • Assessing the potential impact of the deviation or risk acceptance on the organization's security posture.
  • Documenting the rationale for approving deviations or accepting risks.
  • Obtaining necessary approvals from stakeholders according to the established policy exception process


  • Develop and maintain a dynamic Security Awareness & Training program. This includes:


  • Creating and managing the content on the cybersecurity awareness intranet site to address global learning needs for a wide variety of technical and non-technical audiences
  • Establishing metrics to measure the effectiveness of training and awareness activities
  • Delivering training to various audiences
  • Staying current on evolving cyber threats and security trends, and integrating this knowledge into the training program and policy updates
  • Collaborating with subject matter experts to create engaging content that drives change with targeted stakeholders and ensures alignment between policies, training, and technical controls
  • Develop and maintain clear communication channels to keep employees informed about security risks and best practices.
  • Being responsive to questions posed via various internal social media and email channels daily
  • Conduct, track and report out on monthly phishing simulation campaigns and incorporate learnings into the overall Awareness & Training program


Additional Description
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications) :

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Cybersecurity, Information Assurance, or related field acceptable with three years of experience in information technology
  • 5-7 years' experience in a security or compliance role
  • Demonstrated experience in working in global teams
  • Demonstrated technical and professional skills
  • Strong Program / Project Management skills
  • Proven experience in developing and implementing information security policies and procedures
  • Strong understanding of current cybersecurity threats and best practices.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to engage a wide audience
  • Ability to develop and deliver engaging security awareness training content
  • Experience with SharePoint administration, design and editing
  • Strong interpersonal, collaboration and team skills
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to measure the effectiveness
  • Familiarity with relevant security frameworks and regulations (e.g., NIST, PCI, SOX, etc.)
  • Strong project management skills

  • Expertise in documenting concepts intended for technical audiences


  • Extensive ability to grasp and understand technical concepts and transform them into usable documented material for non-technical users
  • Experience in creating user awareness guides, tips and techniques, online help, and other forms of security documentation
  • Absorb, retain and organize information gathered from multiple sources and in a variety of formats
  • Demonstrated superior skills with Microsoft Office software
  • Obtained certifications in one or more of the following preferred: CIA, CISM, CISA, CISSP, CGEIT or CRISC
