Electric vehicle powerhouse Tesla appears to be charging ahead with its hiring efforts for its Texas Gigafactory, a manufacturing facility opening in Austin.
The Palo Alto-based company is currently hiring at least 293 people in Austin. Open positions include engineers, designers, architects and managers, according to the company’s website. Tesla previously said salaries for entry-level roles at the gigafactory will start at $35,000.
“If anyone is interested in looking at Giga Texas, with engineering, production, whatever the case may be, please let us know. ... We’re going to be doing a major factory there,” Tesla CEO Elon Musk said during a July 22 earnings call.
Construction on the manufacturing facility is expected to be complete by the end of 2021. Some operations at the facility may come online as soon as May, according to Community Impact Newspaper.
The four- to five-million-square-foot facility is located near the Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and will produce Tesla’s new Cybertruck and Tesla Semi in addition to Model Y and Model 3 vehicles “for the eastern half of North America,” Musk said during the earnings call.
The gigafactory could employ at least 5,000 people making Tesla Austin’s largest tech employer. Tesla did not respond to an interview request from Built In.
In the meantime, Musk is also hiring for his SpaceX facilities in Texas.
“Please consider moving to Starbase or greater Brownsville/South Padre area in Texas & encourage friends to do so! SpaceX’s hiring needs for engineers, technicians, builders & essential support personnel of all kinds are growing rapidly,” Musk tweeted on Tuesday.
“Starbase will grow by several thousand people over the next year or two,” Musk continued in a second tweet.
The rocket producer also appears to be opening a high-tech factory in Austin. The new facility would develop equipment for Starlink, a branch of SpaceX aimed at developing high-speed, low latency broadband internet via small, low-orbit satellites. According to the job posting, this will be a “state of the art manufacturing facility” to “keep up with global demand.”
SpaceX currently has two locations in Texas — one in the Brownsville and South Padre area and another in McGregor.
