Fans of massively multiplayer online (MMO) games have been waiting for “Crowfall” since 2015. Now it appears that wait is coming to an end.

Austin-based video game developer ArtCraft Entertainment just closed a $11.7 million Series A funding round, which it says is the “final financial step in completing and launching [Crowfall].”

ArtCraft has been working on its first major game for a while. The studio began crowdfunding for “Crowfall” on Kickstarter in February 2015. There it raised over $1.7 million from 16,936 backers. The game has been in development since, but this additional Series A investment will likely be what drives it to its official release later this year.

“Crowfall” promises to be an immersive game where a large amount of players can gather to join forces, complete quests and power up their characters. The fantasy aspect makes it reminiscent of other MMO games like “World of Warcraft,” while the ability to build structures on designated areas adds a unique twist. There are also multiplayer campaigns with definitive endings and winners, which differs from more open-ended MMO games.

An internal beta version of the game is currently in testing, but ArtCraft says it’ll release a public beta in the first quarter of 2020. 5he company is already seeing plenty of interest in trying out the game.

“The timing of this round is perfect, as we gear up to start Beta this quarter,” Gordon Walton, ArtCraft co-founder and president, said in a statement. “More than 300,000 players have signed up to help us test the game in Beta, which will give us the scale we need to make sure the service is ready at launch.”

You can learn more about the game and test out its alpha version or sign up for the beta on the “Crowfall” website.
