PURPOSE OF THE JOB

The purpose of the Actuarial Specialist is to produce complex analyses, manage projects, and oversee team workload to meet high levels of service within the Actuarial department. This position exists to support and execute Company strategy as directed by the Chief Actuary, while acting as a team leader and as a trusted advisor to other business leaders.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Provides technical analyses and participates in process development.

  • Provides technical actuarial analyses in the areas of ratemaking, reserving, analytics, and systems integration.

  • Participates in the development and documentation of actuarial department processes.

  • Takes responsibility to modify processes in order to improve accuracy and efficiency.

  • Develops new business processes or comprehensive analytic efforts.

  • Initiates project design within system constraints and demonstrates an understanding of dependencies.

Works with business leaders to develop and implement new products and expand into new markets.

  • Acts in the capacity of a trusted advisor to other business leaders.

  • Ensures that the work product supports business growth and profitability.

  • Takes a prominent role in communicating and explaining actuarial findings to business leaders.

  • Fosters positive, collaborative working relationships with higher level experts across the organization.

  • Works with individuals in other departments in fulfilling the actuarial role within larger projects.

Assists in developing the actuarial team and oversees subordinates’ work.

  • Maintains a positive work climate and fosters motivation and engagement.

  • Performs at the level of a subject matter expert and a team lead for a functional area (e.g. regulatory/filings, corporate including reserving, systems administrator, pricing, ratemaking).

  • Ensures soundness and integrity of actuarial analyses.

  • Reviews subordinate’s work to uphold consistency with Standards of Practice and provides valuable feedback.

Excess & Surplus Specific:

  • Supports development and enhancement of pricing tools for E&S product lines.

  • Performs individual large complex accounts pricing review and works closely with E&S underwriters.

  • Provides business requirements for system integration and set up data export functions for data reporting.

  • Builds business reports to monitor rate change and profitability of the portfolio.

  • Evaluates and refines pricing assumptions based on industry benchmark data and competitive analysis.

  • Demonstrated success in Commercial Lines (GL, Commercial Auto, and etc.) and/or E&S market environments.

  • Proficient in Excel, Python and SQL; expert in actuarial and statistical modeling techniques. Experienced with data visualization tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI).

  • Strong technical pricing skills with knowledge of exposure-based pricing, experience modelling, catastrophe modelling and stochastic simulation techniques.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This role does not have supervisory responsibilities but may act as a team lead and mentor actuarial analysts.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university required in Applied Mathematics, Computer Science or related field. 

  • Minimum 5 years of related experience in actuarial roles required.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

ACAS designation highly desired but relevant work experience may be considered.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and proven project leadership abilities.

  • Thorough knowledge of actuarial models and ability to assess results.

  • Thorough knowledge of broad segments of ICW systems and related business areas.

  • Experience managing multiple projects and resources.

  • Dedication to building a working knowledge of emerging analytic techniques.

  • Ability to work independently in deriving solutions to new business problems.

  • Comfortable and competent in client interaction settings.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

Office environment – no specific or unusual physical or environmental demands and employees are regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk, and hear. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT 

This position operates in an office environment and requires the frequent use of a computer, telephone, copier, and other standard office equipment.

The current range for this position is

$105,780.03 - $189,347.93

This range is exclusive of fringe benefits and potential bonuses.  If hired at ICW Group, your final base salary compensation will be determined by factors unique to each candidate, including experience, education and the location of the role and considers employees performing substantially similar work.
