Description

Join the Company Changing How the World Navigates Loss

Empathy is transforming the way families navigate life’s most difficult times - from the loss of a loved one to other major life transitions. By combining technology with compassionate human care, we bring clarity, comfort, and peace of mind when it matters most.

We partner with leading employers, insurers, and financial institutions to deliver meaningful, human-centric support at scale. Today, Empathy supports over 45 million people across North America.

Backed by top-tier investors including General Catalyst, Index Ventures, Adams Street, Aleph and Entreé Capital. we’ve raised over $160 million to date, including a $72 million Series C, to expand our impact and scale our mission worldwide.

About the Role

We are looking for a BDR Leader to build, scale, and lead our Business Development function as Empathy expands across enterprise channels. This role is ideal for a leader who loves building from the ground up: designing systems, developing talent, partnering across the go-to-market organization, and creating a high-performing outbound engine in a mission-driven environment.

You will be responsible for defining the BDR strategy, owning the day-to-day leadership of the team, partnering closely with Sales, Marketing, Enablement, and RevOps, and ensuring we consistently generate high-quality pipeline for our enterprise sales organization.

This is a highly visible, high-impact role based in our New York office 3x a week.

In this role you will

What You’ll Do

  • Build, lead, and scale a high-performing BDR team focused on driving qualified pipeline for our enterprise sales organization.
  • Develop clear systems, processes, and operating rhythms that maximize efficiency and effectiveness across inbound and outbound motions.
  • Hire, onboard, coach, and retain top-tier BDR talent; create a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous development.
  • Partner closely with Marketing, Demand Gen, Field Marketing, Sales Leadership, Enablement, and RevOps to align on targeting, messaging, workflows, and success metrics.
  • Own BDR team performance, including KPIs, dashboards, forecasting, and reporting.
  • Establish strong outbound methodologies, prospecting frameworks, and messaging strategies that reflect Empathy’s value proposition and mission.
  • Drive cross-functional collaboration to improve lead flow, scoring, handoffs, and lifecycle processes.
  • Serve as a coachable, learning-oriented leader who thrives in ambiguity and helps bring structure to a fast-growing, early-stage environment.
Requirements

What You Bring

  • 5+ years of overall professional experience, including 2-3 years leading and managing BDR/SDR teams.
  • Proven tenure in both environments:
  • 3+ years at a world-class enterprise sales tech company, and
  • 3+ years at a successful early-stage or high-growth startup.
  • A track record of clear career progression and promotions across multiple companies.

Core Leadership Attributes

  • Demonstrated ability to build systems, processes, and operating structures that improve team efficiency and effectiveness.
  • A known talent magnet — strong ability to hire, inspire, and retain top performers.
  • Deep experience in coaching and developing BDRs into high-impact contributors and future sellers.
  • Highly coachable and open to learning; strong growth mindset.
  • Thrives in early-stage environments — comfortable with change, ambiguity, and building structure where none exists.
  • Strong collaborator with proven success working across Marketing, Demand Gen, Field Marketing, Sales, Enablement, and RevOps.
  • Data-driven operator comfortable with forecasting, reporting, KPIs, and process optimization.
  • Excellent communicator with the ability to translate insights into action.
