Position: Chief Information Officer (CIO)

Location: HQ Auburn Hills, MI | Remote

Department: Executive

Direct Supervisor: President

About the Role

The CIO owns how technology enables the business to run, scale, and win. This is a build-and-align role, not a pure IT role. You connect systems to operations, not systems to theory.

You design and install a business-first technology model that supports branch operations, fleet performance, sales execution, customer experience, and financial visibility across the platform. You standardize what drives value, protect what keeps the field fast, and remove friction across functions.

You operate as a partner to the business. You do not push IT programs. You pull solutions from real operating pain points and deliver tools that leaders use daily.

Success looks like a company where systems are simple, connected, reliable, and largely invisible, and where data drives decisions at every level without slowing execution.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Business-Aligned Technology Strategy (20%)

Own the connection between business needs and technology outcomes.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with Operations, Sales, Finance, and HR to define real business needs
  • Translate field and customer pain points into practical system solutions
  • Define a clear technology roadmap tied to growth, utilization, and EBITDA
  • Set principles: standardize where it matters, simplify everywhere else

Expectations

  • Technology decisions tied to measurable business outcomes
  • No disconnected IT initiatives
  • Clear alignment between systems and how the business runs

Core Systems & Platform Integration (20%)

Own the systems that run the business end-to-end.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and optimize RentalMan (or equivalent), ERP, CRM, fleet, dispatch, and field service systems
  • Integrate systems across order-to-cash, procure-to-pay, and asset lifecycle
  • Eliminate duplicate systems, manual work, and data fragmentation
  • Benchmark and adopt best practices from platforms like United Rentals, Sunbelt, Rain for Rent

Expectations

  • One connected system environment
  • Clean, reliable data across all functions
  • High adoption at branch and enterprise levels

Data, Analytics & Decision Support (15%)

Turn data into daily operating leverage.

Responsibilities

  • Build simple, role-based dashboards for operations, sales, and finance
  • Provide visibility into utilization, revenue, margin, asset turns, and job performance
  • Establish a single source of truth and data governance model
  • Enable predictive insights (demand, maintenance, pricing, credit risk)

Expectations

  • Data used daily, not just reported monthly
  • Fast, consistent reporting across the business
  • Clear linkage between operations and financial outcomes

Customer Experience & Digital Platforms (15%)

Own the digital interface with customers.

Responsibilities

  • Design and deploy customer portals that act as a control center:
    • Orders, dispatch, and equipment status
    • Job progress and system performance
    • Service requests and tickets
    • Invoices, contracts, and payment status
    • Compliance documents and reporting
  • Integrate portal with RentalMan/ERP/CRM/fleet/billing
  • Enable self-service where it improves speed and experience
  • Partner with Sales and Ops to ensure real-world usability

Expectations

  • High customer adoption and satisfaction
  • Reduced inbound calls and manual requests
  • Faster billing cycles and fewer disputes
  • Increased retention and account expansion

Field Enablement & Adoption (10%)

Make systems work in the field.

Responsibilities

  • Design tools that are simple and fast for branch and field teams
  • Remove friction from workflows (dispatch, ticketing, billing, asset tracking)
  • Drive adoption through training, feedback loops, and iteration
  • Standardize core workflows while preserving local speed

Expectations

  • High system adoption across all levels
  • Reduced workarounds and shadow processes
  • Faster execution at the branch level

IT Operations, Security & Infrastructure (10%)

Ensure systems are stable, secure, and scalable.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain infrastructure, cloud environment, and system uptime
  • Lead cybersecurity, data protection, and compliance
  • Manage vendors, service providers, and contracts
  • Ensure business continuity and disaster recovery readiness

Expectations

  • High system uptime and reliability
  • No major security incidents
  • Strong vendor accountability and cost control

Innovation, Automation & Scalable Architecture (10%)

Introduce practical innovation that drives ROI.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and deploy automation, integration, and AI tools that improve operations
  • Build scalable architecture that supports growth and acquisitions
  • Avoid overengineering and unnecessary complexity
  • Support digital capabilities tied to Total Solutions (system visibility, reporting, compliance)

Expectations

  • Measurable efficiency gains and cost reduction
  • Scalable systems that support growth
  • Innovation tied to business value, not technology trends

Measures of Performance

  • System uptime and reliability
  • User adoption and satisfaction (field and customer)
  • Reduction in manual processes and cycle times
  • Data accuracy and reporting speed
  • Integration of core systems (RentalMan/ERP/CRM/fleet)

  • Contribution to revenue growth, utilization, and margin
  • Cybersecurity and compliance outcomes

Qualifications

  • Ability to simplify complex systems
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration
  • High ownership and accountability

Qualifications

  • 12–15+ years in IT leadership roles in industrial services, rental, construction, or asset-heavy environments
  • Experience with systems such as RentalMan, SAP, Oracle, JD Edwards, or similar
  • Proven success integrating systems across multi-site operations
  • Experience in high-growth or private equity environments preferred
  • Strong understanding of field operations, fleet management, and service workflows
