Job Type: Contractor

Location: Remote

Become a part of our customer's team as a Computational CAD Engineer specializing in OpenSCAD, where your practical skills with OpenSCAD will drive the development of cutting-edge AI-enabled design training. You will apply your advanced scripting and modeling expertise to create parametric and programmatically controlled 2D and 3D models, facilitating strong AI data workflows.

Requirements

Key Responsibilities:

- Create, document, and refine OpenSCAD scripts for both straightforward and intricate CAD models

- Convert initial sketches into detailed, production-ready designs

- Apply advanced OpenSCAD techniques such as Boolean operations, list comprehensions, and flow control to generate a variety of geometries

- Use methods like linear_extrude, rotate_extrude, and minkowski to develop innovative 3D shapes

- Construct 3D forms from 2D silhouettes and efficiently position fundamental shapes (cuboids, spheres, cylinders, cones) within the design environment

- Design and implement reusable components by utilizing nesting and loop structures

- Work closely with data and AI teams, effectively communicating design logic, syntax, and modeling choices both verbally and in writing

Required Skills and Qualifications:

- Extensive hands-on experience and proficiency specifically in OpenSCAD (experience with other CAD software is insufficient)

- Strong expertise in OpenSCAD syntax, including constants, operators, special variables, and modifier characters

- Proven skills in creating and transforming 2D and 3D objects and performing Boolean operations

- Familiarity with advanced OpenSCAD features such as lists, list comprehensions, flow control, and type testing functions

- Solid practical knowledge of the OpenSCAD interface and workflow

- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly articulate technical concepts

- Capability to iterate from conceptual ideas to final designs while emphasizing code clarity and model precision

Preferred Qualifications:

- Prior experience in AI training data creation or automation processes

- Knowledge of integrating OpenSCAD outputs into broader data pipelines

- Strong documentation abilities and a portfolio showcasing OpenSCAD projects

What you need to know about the Austin Tech Scene

Austin has a diverse and thriving tech ecosystem thanks to home-grown companies like Dell and major campuses for IBM, AMD and Apple. The state’s flagship university, the University of Texas at Austin, is known for its engineering school, and the city is known for its annual South by Southwest tech and media conference. Austin’s tech scene spans many verticals, but it’s particularly known for hardware, including semiconductors, as well as AI, biotechnology and cloud computing. And its food and music scene, low taxes and favorable climate has made the city a destination for tech workers from across the country.

Key Facts About Austin Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 180,500; 13.7% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Dell, IBM, AMD, Apple, Alphabet
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, hardware, cloud computing, software, healthtech
  • Funding Landscape: $4.5 billion in VC funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Live Oak Ventures, Austin Ventures, Hinge Capital, Gigafund, KdT Ventures, Next Coast Ventures, Silverton Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Texas, Southwestern University, Texas State University, Center for Complex Quantum Systems, Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences, Texas Advanced Computing Center
