Job Summary

To support our extraordinary team who build great products and contribute to our growth, we’re looking to add an Controls Manager located in Austin,Tx.  

Reporting to the Director, Operations Engineering the  Controls Manager is responsible for leading a team of controls engineers in the design, development, and implementation of automated control systems for machinery and processes. This role combines technical expertise with leadership responsibilities, ensuring projects are delivered on time. The position requires strong knowledge of PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, and industrial automation technologies, as well as the ability to mentor and guide team members.

What a typical day looks like:

  • Leadership & Team Management
    • Lead and mentor a team of controls engineers, providing technical guidance and career development.
    • Allocate resources, assign tasks, and monitor progress to ensure timely project delivery.
    • Foster a collaborative and innovative team environment.
  • Project Management
    • Plan and direct controls-related project responsibilities from concept through commissioning.
    • Develop project scopes, budgets, schedules, and risk assessments.
    • Ensure compliance with organizational standards and industry regulations.
  • Technical Expertise
    • Design, develop, and implement control systems including PLC programming, HMI development, and SCADA integration.
    • Oversee system simulations, testing, and debugging to ensure functionality and reliability.
    • Stay current with emerging automation technologies and implement best practices.
  • Customer & Stakeholder Interaction
    • Participate in technical discussions with clients and internal teams.
    • Provide training and support for customers and maintenance staff.
    • Prepare documentation, including operating instructions and system specifications.

The experience we’re looking to add to our team:

  • Education:
    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, or related field.
  • Experience:
    • 7+ years in controls engineering, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficiency in PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Beckhoff, etc.).
    • Experience with HMI/SCADA systems and industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus).
    • Knowledge of safety standards (ANSI, IEC, NFPA).
    • Knowledge of working in a GAMP/GxP environment.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities.
    • Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Preferred Certifications

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent.
  • Functional Safety Certification (TÜV or similar)
