At Netflix, our mission is to entertain the world. Together, we are writing the next episode - pushing the boundaries of storytelling, global fandom and making the unimaginable a reality. We are a dream team obsessed with the uncomfortable excitement of discovering what happens when you merge creativity, intuition and cutting-edge technology. Come be a part of what’s next.
The Content Data Science and Engineering team provides Netflix with a trusted measurement framework for content quality and value. We develop and evolve the metrics that inform billions of dollars in content investment decisions. As a measurement center of excellence, we don't just compute metrics - we define what success means. Through continuous research, validation, and cross-functional partnership, we ensure our frameworks remain rigorous and relevant as Netflix's content strategy evolves.
This role is for a Senior Data Scientist (L5) focused on measurement strategy and metrics development. You'll create the scoreboard that others use to evaluate success. We're looking for curious, proactive measurement experts who independently identify gaps in our frameworks, propose impactful research initiatives, and build the evidence base that informs strategic content decisions.
In this role, you will:
Design and validate measurement frameworks that accurately capture content quality, engagement, and business value across diverse content types
Autonomously identify measurement gaps and pursue research with significant business impact, making compelling cases for prioritization
Apply causal inference, observational analysis, and statistical modeling to understand drivers of content value and member satisfaction
Ensure metrics measure what they intend to, identifying potential biases, edge cases, and unintended consequences before they impact decisions
Partner across Content, Product, Finance, and Engineering to align measurement approaches with business needs and technical constraints
Serve as a strategic thought partner to stakeholders, influencing content and product strategy through clear measurement insights
Contribute to team growth through documentation, mentorship, and knowledge sharing that uplevels skills and practices
Build well-documented datasets, tools, and analytical frameworks that scale across the organization
Present research clearly to technical and non-technical audiences at all levels
What you’ll bring:
Advanced degree (PhD or Master's) in Statistics, Economics, Quantitative Social Sciences, Operations Research, Mathematics, or related field
5+ years applying statistical methods and causal inference to real-world product or business problems
Deep measurement expertise—metric design, bias detection, trade-off analysis—with a track record of developing frameworks that informed strategic decisions, not just executing analyses using existing metrics
Strong foundation in experimental design, regression analysis, and causal inference methods
Proficiency in SQL and quantitative programming (Python or R)
Ability to work independently: identifying impactful problems, scoping research, and driving projects from ambiguous starting points
Comfort navigating problem spaces where the "right answer" requires judgment alongside calculation
Excellent communication and influence across organizational levels, translating complex concepts for diverse audiences
Intellectual curiosity and proactive mindset—asking "what should we be measuring?" not just "what are we measuring?"
Embodies Netflix values while bringing fresh perspectives to strengthen our culture
We'd be especially excited if you also have:
Experience in content analytics, user behavior measurement, or related domains
Track record of mentoring and upleveling peers
Comfort leveraging AI tools (LLMs, generative AI) to enhance analytical workflows and accelerate research
