Voyant is seeking a hands-on Director of Backend Engineering to play a key role in building and evolving our core server platform. This is a highly technical role for a player-coach who will contribute directly to the codebase while serving as the go-to technical leader and mentor for the team.
You will partner closely with product and engineering leadership to design and deliver scalable, secure backend systems, while helping guide technical decisions and elevate engineering quality across the team.
Location: Austin, TX (onsite)
Primary Responsibilities:
- Hands-On Development – Design, build, and maintain backend systems, APIs, and services. Write high-quality, efficient, and maintainable code.
- Technical Leadership – Serve as the go-to technical leader for the team, guiding design decisions and setting engineering standards.
- Mentorship – Mentor and support junior developers, providing guidance, feedback, and technical coaching.
- Architecture & Design – Contribute to and help shape scalable, secure, and maintainable system architecture.
- Code Quality – Lead code reviews and promote best practices across the codebase.
- Problem Solving – Analyze complex technical challenges and implement effective solutions.
- Collaboration – Partner closely with product, design, and other engineers to deliver features and improvements.
- Security & Reliability – Ensure systems meet high standards for security, performance, and reliability.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Demonstrated extensive experience in designing, developing, and maintaining complex software solutions.
- Strong understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and best practices.
- Expertise with Spring and Hibernate.
- Experience implementing SSO solutions such as SAML and OpenID.
- MySQL or other RDBMS.
- Self-starter who takes initiative and helps to define the product design.
- Comfortable working in an agile development process.
- Must like dogs (they are in the office, everyday).
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's or master’s degree in computer science, or equivalent field.
- 8–12+ years of software engineering experience, with strong backend development expertise.

Compensation: The Base Salary range for this position is between $180,000-$220,000.
This information reflects a base salary range that AssetMark reasonably expects to pay for the position based on a number of factors which may include job-related knowledge, skills, education, experience, and actual work location. This position will also be eligible for additional variable incentive compensation and competitive benefits.
