Position: Director of Clinical Education and Competency

The Director of Clinical Education and Competency is a centralized operational leader responsible for the design, execution, and continuous improvement of clinical education, competency management, and remediation across the organization. This role ensures a consistently high performing clinical workforce by translating clinical strategy into standardized training, validated competencies, and measurable performance outcomes.

Operating within the Chief Clinical Officer’s clinical performance model, the Director establishes and maintains a closed loop system that supports onboarding, ongoing competency validation, targeted remediation, and regulatory readiness. The role partners closely with Nursing Practice Excellence, APP Practice Excellence, Quality & Compliance, Operations, and Learning & Development to reduce variability, improve execution, and enable scalable clinical excellence.

 

Responsibilities
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive, system wide clinical education and competency strategy aligned with organizational priorities, regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and evolving clinical models of care
  • Serve as the centralized owner of clinical education and competency management across all clinical roles and specialties
  • Act as a subject matter expert and strategic advisor to executive and clinical leadership on workforce readiness, competency risk, and education best practices
  • Establish standardized frameworks for onboarding, ongoing competency assessment, role specific training, and performance remediation
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of initial, annual, and role-based competency programs for clinicians
  • Identify training gaps and performance risks through data, quality signals, and stakeholder input, and design targeted remediation plans to address them
  • Ensure competency validation processes are evidence based, consistently applied, auditable, and aligned with CME and accreditation standards
  • Maintain continuous readiness for regulatory surveys, audits, and accreditation reviews related to clinical education, competency, and CME requirements
  • Oversee BLS/CPR and required clinical certification processes to ensure all clinicians remain current and compliant
  • Partner with operational and clinical leaders to plan and execute educational blocks, training rollouts, and competency refresh cycles that minimize disruption while maximizing impact
  • Define and monitor key metrics to assess education effectiveness, competency outcomes, clinician readiness, and return on investment
  • Use performance data, quality outcomes, and clinician feedback to continuously improve education content, delivery methods, and competency processes
  • Contribute to the broader clinical performance feedback loop by informing practice excellence leaders and quality teams of systemic education or competency trends

Position Requirements 
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Healthcare Administration, Education, or a related clinical field; Master’s degree preferred
  • Active and unrestrictedclinical license
  • Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive clinical experience, including five (5) years of experience in clinical education, professional practice, competency management, or a related leadership role
  • Demonstrated knowledge of regulatory, accreditation, and CME standards related to clinical education and competency
  • Understanding of competency assessment, validation methodologies, and remediation design
  • Communication, facilitation, and executive level presentation skills
  • Experience designing enterprise scale education or competency programs in a multi-site or growth oriented organization preferred
  • Experience partnering with quality, compliance, and operational leaders in a performance driven clinical environment preferred
