Job Summary:

ExtendAg is hiring a Director of Engineering Excellence to lead the transformation of our software engineering organization toward greater discipline, predictability, and scalability. This is a pivotal leadership role that will shape how we design, build, and deliver our products — ensuring our solutions are not only innovative, but also reliable, repeatable, and commercially aligned.
The ideal candidate brings a balance of technical depth, leadership maturity, and process acumen. They are passionate about developing technical talent, modernizing SDLC practices, and turning customer-specific solutions into standardized, productized capabilities. This role will be instrumental in embedding engineering excellence across the organization by defining clear standards, implementing best practices, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
If you’re motivated by building high-performing teams, improving delivery discipline, and setting a new standard for software excellence in a rapidly evolving SaaS environment, this is an opportunity to make a lasting impact.

Job Description:

Role Scope and Responsibilities:

The Director of Engineering will oversee the following areas:

  • Development - Manage development velocity and product quality by aligning engineering efforts with customer project timelines and R&D priorities.
  • Quality Assurance - Establish and enforce robust QA processes to ensure quality and release readiness, particularly around customer-specific implementations.

This position will partner closely with Commercial leadership to ensure our engineering outcomes directly support customer value, business growth, and operational efficiency. The Director of Engineering Excellence will serve as both a technical mentor and a change agent, driving initiatives that improve delivery predictability, code quality, and cross-team collaboration.

Key Objectives:
  • Define, document, and enforce engineering standards, architecture guidelines, and coding practices across all product lines.
  • Implement quality and compliance frameworks that balance agility with enterprise-grade reliability and security.
  • Establish metrics and dashboards to track engineering performance, velocity, and quality.
  • Lead continuous improvement of the software development life cycle (SDLC) to increase delivery predictability, reduce rework, and improve time-to-market.
  • Partner with Commercial leadership to align development priorities with roadmap commitments and release cadence.
  • Drive standardization and reuse through productization—converting bespoke or custom solutions into scalable, configurable modules.
  • Develop a technical excellence program to strengthen engineering capability across design, coding, testing, and DevOps.
  • Mentor technical leads and principal developers to foster a high-performance, learning-driven culture.
  • Define engineering career paths, competency frameworks, and professional development plans tied to business outcomes.
  • Implement project delivery frameworks that improve estimation accuracy, resource planning, and execution tracking.
  • Introduce maturity models and stage gates for requirements, design, and QA readiness to ensure delivery discipline.
  • Collaborate with PMO and Customer Success teams to ensure commitments are met and lessons learned are institutionalized.
  • Partner with Product, Customer Success, and Commercial teams to improve how engineering outcomes translate to customer value.
  • Participate in strategic initiatives such as AI enablement, platform modernization, and ecosystem integration.
  • Support leadership in setting quarterly engineering OKRs and transformation KPIs.
Key Metrics of Success
  • Reduction in delivery variance (budget, timeline, and quality).
  • Increase in code reuse and standardized components across products.
  • Improvement in engineering velocity and throughput (story points per sprint, defect rates, etc.).
  • Talent retention and advancement within engineering roles.
  • Engineering satisfaction and stakeholder feedback scores.
Ideal Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate is a strategic engineering leader with deep technical credibility and a proven track record of elevating software development organizations to higher levels of maturity, discipline, and predictability. They blend hands-on understanding of modern software engineering with the leadership presence needed to influence teams, drive cross-functional alignment, and implement change at scale.

  • Proven Operational Leadership: Demonstrated experience leading cross-functional teams (Professional Services, Development, QA, Support).
  • Process & SDLC Mastery: Strong knowledge of modern software development life cycle methodologies (Agile, DevOps, CI/CD).
  • Execution Discipline: Track record of driving operational efficiency, delivering on commitments, and hitting KPIs.
  • Analytical Problem Solving: Ability to diagnose operational bottlenecks, design scalable solutions, and make data-driven decisions.
  • Change Management: Experience leading teams through transformation (modernization, scaling, restructuring).
  • Collaboration & Communication: Clear communicator across leadership, technical teams, and customers.
  • Customer Orientation: Ability to balance technical execution with delivering customer value in enterprise/SaaS environment.
  • Talent Development: Skilled in building, mentoring, and retaining high-performing technical teams.
  • Technology Modernization Experience: Exposure to re-platforming, cloud migrations, or tech-stack optimization to enable scalability.
  • Innovation Orientation: Comfort with adopting AI/ML, automation, or emerging tools to streamline operations.
