Director, Institutional Giving, Foundations & Grants

PHA made a commitment to add 100 million servings of fruits, vegetables, and legumes to the marketplace, and we have made significant progress towards that goal, providing over 49 million servings to-date through evidence-based programs.

Position Summary:

PHA is seeking an accomplished fundraising professional to lead and grow its foundation and grants function: the engine behind one of PHA's largest revenue portfolios. The Director, Foundations & Grants will own a multimillion-dollar institutional funding portfolio across its full lifecycle, from prospect research and cultivation through proposal development, stewardship, and grants management.

The ideal candidate is both a compelling writer and a disciplined relationship manager who can translate PHA's programmatic impact into a strong, data-backed case for support and build a diversified, multi-year pipeline of foundation and government partners. PHA's foundations portfolio spans local, regional, and national foundations as well as government funders, including transformational, seven-figure relationships that anchor the organization's core programs in Good Food Cities, Good Food at Home, and the Mississippi Delta. This role is responsible for protecting and expanding that base, diversifying PHA's funder mix, and strengthening the year-round grants engine that sustains the organization's mission.

This is a highly collaborative role. The Director will work in close and regular partnership with the SVP of Programs and program leadership to ground every proposal in strong program design and deliverables, and with the Impact & Evaluation team to secure the metrics and case studies that funders require. The Director will also supervise and develop PHA's Development Coordinator.

Key Responsibilities:

• Own and grow PHA's foundation and government grants portfolio, currently targeting $3M+ in annual revenue, across the full lifecycle: prospect research, cultivation, proposal development, stewardship, and reporting;
• Develop and execute a year-round grants strategy that diversifies PHA's institutional funding base, raises revenue, and builds a multi-year pipeline of foundation and government partners;
• Write, edit, and manage compelling, data-backed grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and funder reports that translate PHA's programmatic impact into a strong case for support;
• Build relationships and manage a portfolio of foundation and institutional funders - including transformational, seven-figure partners - coordinating executive sponsors (CEO and the Leadership Team) on marquee relationships;
• Partner closely and regularly with the SVP of Programs and program leaders to align proposals with program design, deliverables, and outcomes, and to ensure funder commitments match program capacity;
• Collaborate with Impact & Evaluation staff to secure the data, outcomes, and case studies needed to substantiate proposals and reports;
• Partner with the Marketing & Communications staff to create compelling Development materials such as proposal narratives, impact storytelling, and other sales collateral needed to secure and grow revenue;
• Oversee grants management and compliance, ensuring timely, accurate reporting and expenditure tracking in coordination with Finance staff;
• Supervise and nurture the talent of the Development Coordinator, overseeing prospect research, the grants calendar, acknowledgment workflows, and CRM management (currently Salesforce);
• Maintain a transparent, intuitive, and actionable pipeline and active reporting rhythm for leadership;
• Represent Partnership for a Healthier America with funders, partners, the Board of Directors, and at sector convenings; other duties as assigned.

Qualifications and Experience:

• Minimum of 6 years of nonprofit development experience, with a demonstrated track record of securing five- and six-figure foundation and/or government grants; experience with seven-figure institutional funders strongly preferred;
• Bachelor's or master's degree in a related field, or equivalent professional experience;
• Exceptional and demonstrable grant writing and editing skills, with the ability to translate complex program and impact information into clear, compelling, data-backed narratives;
• Dynamic presentation skills that can reflect PHA’s values, vision, and mission in context with our programs and activities in a clear and compelling manner;
• Experience building and managing a diversified institutional funding pipeline and cultivating multi-year funder relationships;
• Working knowledge of grants management and compliance, including funder reporting and expenditure tracking;
• Strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines across a year-round grants calendar;
• A collaborative working style, with the ability to partner effectively across programs, finance, marketing & communications, evaluation, and leadership;
• Experience supervising, mentoring, or developing staff;
• Proficiency with CRM/donor databases and prospect research tools, Salesforce preferred;

Reporting Structure:

The Director, Foundations & Grants reports to the SVP Strategic Partnerships, works in close collaboration with the SVP of Programs, and supervises the Development Coordinator.

Compensation & Benefits:

The salary range for this position is $90,000 to $110,000, commensurate with experience. Partnership for a Healthier America has a competitive benefits package that includes health insurance, dental insurance, 401K with an employer match, paid vacation and sick leave, paid time off during the last week of the calendar year, 11 paid Federal holidays, and the ability to work remotely full time.
