Every day, thousands of developers and marketers use our WebOps platform to build, iterate, and scale WordPress, Drupal, and Next.js sites that reach billions of people worldwide. As an employer, we operate with the same philosophy that drives our product: foundation and freedom. Pantheon is a vibrant, remote-forward team of experts who care deeply about their craft and results. Here, you take ownership of work that matters, contribute alongside exceptional people, and see the impact you create.

The Role

Pantheon is looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to grow our account management and identity services to the next level. In our evolving developer ecosystem, we need to support traditional user access patterns as well as AI agents as primary use cases. This rethinking of how our customers work is at the heart of the team’s mission.

We are looking for a hands-on people manager that has experience building full stack security-focused services for our customer base. You thrive as a player-coach, knowing when to make technical decisions and when to delegate. You are an AI advocate and also have the foundational knowledge to dive in deep.

What You’ll Do

  • Drive frontend and backend excellence across the team’s services, maintaining the highest level of reliability for both customers and our own engineers.
  • Architect our backend systems using modern design patterns and technologies.
  • Work with partners across Product, Security, UX, and Design to drive a technical roadmap centered around the evolving needs of our customers.
  • Bring the best of the industry to the team, whether that’s new developments in agentic tooling, open source technologies, or exciting vendors to evaluate.
  • Apply a security mindset to everything that we build, keeping our customers' safety front of mind.
  • Use data and retrospectives to consistently evolve the productivity and well-being of your team.
  • Set a high performance bar for your team, measured by roadmap success, technical excellence, and high levels of individual growth.
  • Hire, coach, and grow engineers with hands-on guidance, building a culture of ownership, accountability, and knowledge sharing.
  • Mentor senior engineers to the next level by purposefully delegating leadership responsibilities and making space for stretch development goals.
  • Navigate hard conversations with empathy and authenticity, treat failures as learning moments, and create space for your team to drive success.
What You’ll Bring to the Table
  • 8+ years of experience in software development, including a solid foundation as an individual contributor.
  • 3+ years of direct people management experience: leading a team, mentoring engineers, or tech-lead responsibilities with people ownership.
  • Track record of successfully launching and operating full stack, production-scale projects with stringent SLOs.
  • Deep knowledge of identity access management and other developer-focused security products.
  • Proficiency in Go, Python, or a similar language, enough to review code, tech designs, and engage credibly in technical discussion.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native infrastructure: GCP (or equivalent cloud), serverless applications like Cloud Run, AWS Lambda or Azure Functions, and Terraform.
  • AI-native instincts: fluency with AI coding assistants and a track record of how they change how your teams work.

The team's domain is broad, and we don't expect candidates to check every box. The ideal candidate brings depth in a few of these areas:

  • Authorization at scale: Familiarity with ReBAC and ABAC. (Zanzibar-style systems such as Auth0 FGA, OpenFGA, or SpiceDB).
  • Multi-tenant account modeling: business accounts, organizations, workspaces, teams, and the role and permission hierarchies that connect them.
  • GraphQL API design, federation, and gateway architectures.
  • Search and indexing services (Elasticsearch or similar) and event-driven data pipelines (Pub/Sub or similar).
  • Notification service for in-product, webhooks, SMS, email, and other third-party services
  • Decommissioning legacy systems and running incremental migrations without customer disruption.
  • Vendor evaluation and build-vs-buy analysis for platform capabilities such as notifications or AI-powered support.
  • Developer-facing surfaces: CLIs and public APIs used by technical customers.
What We Offer

We have all the usual perks and benefits but what we can really offer you is a fantastic work environment powered by an amazing team.

  • Industry competitive compensation and equity plan
  • Flexible time off, sick days, and 13 paid holidays
  • Comprehensive medical insurance including Health, Dental and Vision
  • Paid parental leave (plus fertility, adoption and other family planning benefits)
  • In-office workspace (San Francisco & Chicago)
  • Monthly allowance for wellness, reading and access to LinkedIn Learning for continued development
  • Events and activities both team-based and company wide that inspire, educate and cultivate
