Engineering Manager 

College Board Technology/Infosec and Infrastructure/Workforce Technology & Services/Workforce Tools & Integration  

Location: This is a fully remote role. Candidates who live near CB offices have the option of being fully remote or hybrid (Tuesday and Wednesday in office).

About the Team  

The Workforce Tools & Integration team builds solutions to help reimagine and reshape engineering practices within College Board to best meet the needs of the millions of students and thousands of colleges, schools, and districts we serve. We support our entire organization that has transformed to Agile, embracing DevOps and Cloud-native systems, with the goal of improving speed and reliability of service delivery in support of our mission. We work with Product DevOps, Network Engineering, Security, and Infrastructure teams to design, build and manage robust workforce solutions. We are a team with a unique blend of skills and experiences, yet we underline the value of each individual and celebrate the successes of the TEAM. About the Opportunity   

As an Engineering Manager, you are an idea-generator, a catalyst, a collaborator, and a leader. You understand cloud software delivery and the tools and processes that empower efficient and resilient delivery that adheres to top-notch development practices. You will serve as a mentor to the team, bringing them up to speed and enabling all to make healthy contributions. You will carry the voice of the customer to leadership and engineers, helping to bridge the gap between ideas, solutions, and delivery. You will use your inquisitive nature and learning agility to continually seek out useful information that can shape products for the good of the user. You will build strong, productive relationships while guiding, leading, and nurturing your team and stakeholders to produce tremendous value for our customers.  

   

In this role, you will:  

Discovery, Definition & Delivery (40%) 

  • Design, build, deliver, and support the execution of seamless product lines with an emphasis on the customer experience while ensuring efficient delivery. 

  • Manage workforce technology-based tools that enhance every stage of the employee life cycle and elevate the overall employee experience  

  • Lead Agile processes as a core member of the product development team, attending and actively participating in ceremonies such as sprint planning, daily scrums, sprint reviews/demos, retrospectives to drive collaboration and momentum. 

  • Collaborate with technology leaders and other stakeholders to translate the product roadmap into clear, actionable deliverables for the development team. 

  • Prioritize and sequence epics and stories in the product backlog based on feature priority. 

  • Work with stakeholders to resolve dependencies, negotiate, coordinate, and align priorities to successfully deliver features. 

  • Ensure the product backlog is visible, transparent, and well-understood by all, clearly showing what the development team will work on next. 

  • Write code to automate the infrastructure lifecycle, create and support internal tools and utilize CLIs to streamline processes. 

  • Partner with technology leaders to understand business objectives and align architectures and cloud product offerings with those objectives. 

  • Contribute to the development and growth of the Cloud Infrastructure Services, through thought leadership, design and implementation of forward-thinking tools and processes. 

  • Participate in the Enterprise Architecture Review process as a key stakeholder in defining infrastructure products’ architecture  

 

Strategy & Communication (30%) 

  • Craft a compelling vision and strategic plan grounded in data to ensure we deliver an engaging, inclusive experience for all staff. 

  • Serve as AI Technology Partner, collaborating closely with business owners and the security team to design and deliver secure, value-driven workforce AI solutions that align with strategic goals and enhance operational efficiency. 

  • Solution and implement cloud-first architectural best practices that enable agility, scalability, and operational efficiency  

  • Contribute to technology strategy and planning to ensure alignment with organizational objectives and industry best practices   

  • Conduct research on emerging technologies to support systems development efforts and recommend technologies that will increase cost effectiveness and systems flexibility.   

  • Lead agile ceremonies (Sprint Planning, Grooming, Demo, etc.) and contribute to the delivery of high-quality team deliverables. 

  • Conduct peer reviews of software engineering artifacts to strengthen code quality and promote engineering excellence  

  • Lead in the identification and resolution of production and production-like issues to maintain system stability, performance, and reliability. 

 

Team Management (30%) 

  • Lead and manage a team of 7 highly skilled engineers, ranging from Engineering Leads and Senior Engineers to junior engineers, fostering collaboration, technical excellence, and career development across experience levels. 

  • Effectively manage the engineering backlog to ensure team members are engaged, focused, and working effectively toward accomplishing goals. 

  • Lead technical efforts and mentor technical staff in developing and leveraging technology architectures and solutions, including migration to AWS Cloud and SaaS platforms 

  • Set vision and priorities for the team, track and manage progress to goals, and provide coaching and support to ensure team members meet and exceed goals, remain engaged, and contribute meaningfully to our mission 

  • Cultivate an inclusive and high achieving culture that enables all team members to live out College Board’s Operating Principles. 

  • Bring proven leadership experience and consistently embody College Board’s Manager Expectations in your work. 

 

About You  

  • 7+ years of professional work experience including a minimum of 5 years working in technology 

  • 3+ years of recent experience working as an Engineering Manager with proven expertise in delivering product or platform-level features for event-driven cloud-based solutions 

  • Experience managing teams of 4 to 8 direct reports, including higher-level individual contributors. 

  • Experience in: 

  • Building event-driven AWS cloud-based serverless applications. 

  • Building API’s or other back-end services. 

  • Coding using Python, JavaScript, TypeScript, React.js, Node.js, or Java 

  • A strategic and inclusive leadership style: you set clear priorities, build effective team structures, plan for future needs, and foster a culture of belonging. 

  • A proven ability to drive performance and growth: you set high expectations, deliver real-time, evidence-based feedback, and coach team members to take smart risks, stretch their skills, and achieve meaningful impact. 

  • Strong experience working in an Agile product development environment. 

  • Ability to identify opportunities where AI can streamline processes, uncover insights, or improve outcomes.   

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with an ability to present ideas in user-friendly and engineering language. 

  • Experience leading engineering and architecture discussions that foster open and respectful dialogue, bringing stakeholders to agreement 

  • Exceptional planning, prioritization, and execution skills, delivering results on time and on budget in fast-paced environments. 

  • A bachelor's degree in the field of computer science preferred. 

  • Able to travel 3-5 times a year to our NYC or Reston, VA office  

 

Additional nice-to-haves: 

  • Professional training and/or certifications using Amazon Web Services, Linux, Java, etc.  

  • Experience or knowledge of workforce technology tools such as Atlassian Suite, Slack, Zoom, G-Suite, o365, Github, etc.

About Our Process

  • The hiring range for this role is $125,000–$170,000.
