Department OverviewAs a global leader in professional mobile communications, Motorola Solutions possesses a distinguished history of technological breakthroughs and a vast international network of established systems. The group primarily focuses on deploying mission-critical digital mobile communication solutions tailored for Public Safety and Government sectors.
To ensure the successful execution of projects, the department maintains a collaborative environment involving diverse internal and external stakeholders, such as Engineers, System Managers, Project Managers, the Sales Department, Service Partners, and System Technologists. Due to the essential nature of public safety support, the Field Service Organization (FSO) maintains a mandatory 100% on-call readiness.
The Field Engineer position is dedicated to supporting the Motorola Solutions Field Engineering T8 North team. This team manages a service territory encompassing Washington, Oregon, California, Montana, and/or Idaho.
Job Description
Responsible for the post-sale installation, optimization, maintenance, and management of complex mission critical communication systems. This role focuses on proactively maintaining optimal system performance, responding to system-level alarms/errors, and performing advanced troubleshooting, hardware, and software installation and optimization. The Field Engineer ensures system availability through routine maintenance and continuous performance monitoring.
This role is responsible for providing high-level technical support, optimization, and documentation for specialized communications systems, including complex RF and Broadband architectures, as well as essential network infrastructure.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Perform installation, optimization, and maintenance on various public safety systems, including: VHF, UHF, and 700/800 public radio systems, 911/Emergency Communications Workflow (ECW)/Airbus equipment, Next Generation 911 (NG911) infrastructure, and NICE public safety logging systems.
Execute preventative maintenance routines, focusing on trend analysis and documentation to ensure proper system operation.
Develop technical solutions for complex problems encountered during system implementation, upgrades, or support issues.
Apply extensive knowledge of the latest technologies and troubleshooting techniques in transport, communications, and RF systems.
Collaborate with System Managers, Engineering, Project Management, Sales, System Technologists, and partners to design, implement, optimize, and cut-over advanced communication systems that meet or exceed customer expectations.
Provide advanced technical support for specialized systems and product applications, focusing on troubleshooting software-driven electronics and optimizing performance for RF and Broadband architectures.
Work with various technologies, including legacy analog, advanced digital P25, and data infrastructure.
Program, configure, optimize, test, and document complex communications systems.
Develop and implement solutions for difficult technical challenges encountered during system implementation, upgrades, or support activities.
Perform preventative maintenance routines to ensure proper system operation, focusing on trend analysis and meticulous documentation of results.
Submit comprehensive weekly reports detailing activities and accomplishments.
Essential Qualifications and Requirements:
Education/Certification: Associate’s Degree, EET, Technical Certification, Project Management Certification, IT Certification, OR Military Technical Certification is required. CET is required within 6 months of hire. FCC License and industry certifications are a plus.
Technical Expertise:
Knowledge of R.F. systems, including transmitters, receivers, and antenna networks.
Proficiency in using various communications test equipment.
Strong working knowledge of P25 radio systems and trunking/SmartZone systems.
Strong knowledge of wired/wireless communication systems, including Local Area Networks (LAN) and Wide Area Networks (WAN).
Proficiency in computer network installation, configuration, and maintenance, including cabling, routers, switches, and bridges.
Strong knowledge of NICE public safety logging systems.
Strong knowledge of standard telephony, dedicated data circuits, and packet switching techniques.
Experience with one or more of the following: P25 Systems, NICE public safety loggers, LMR RF systems, wired/wireless communication systems, networking equipment, and IT networks.
Experience in the configuration and testing of Motorola two-way radio and subscriber products.
Proficient in the use of optimization and testing equipment (e.g., Communications Systems Analyzers, watt meters, TIMS sets, CPS, RSS, Antenna Systems Analyzers (FDRs), T1 test sets)
Strong knowledge and proficiency in wired communications systems (LAN/WAN).
Expertise in computer network installation, configuration, and maintenance, including cabling, routers, switches, firewalls, and bridges.
Ability to install server hardware/Operating Systems and software infrastructure, and troubleshoot to resolve system/application issues.
Knowledge of standard telephony, dedicated data circuits, and packet switching techniques.
High computer literacy, with proficiency in Google Suite platform, MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access.
Optimization and support of complex communication systems.
Experience with unique combinations of multi-site RF communication systems and/or computer/networking skills.
Experience with logging recording systems, RF interfaces, wired/wireless communications systems, and/or networking equipment.
Experience with the following equipment is desirable:
Consoles (MCC7500, MCC7100)
Channel Banks and T1 Circuits
Computer IP Networks and Configuration
RF Infrastructure Technologies
Candidate Requirements:
The Field Engineer MUST live in the state of California to support public safety customers and there may be additional project work in the T8 territory which includes Washington, Oregon, California, Montana, Alaska, Hawaii and/or Idaho.
Must be willing to travel 50% - 75% of the time.
Must live a comfortable distance to a major airport.
Must be a US Citizen and able to obtain background clearance as required by US government customers.
Must have a current, valid driver’s license and no traffic violations.
Ability to be on-call 24/7/365
Must be able to successfully pass and maintain the ability to pass background checks and obtain security clearances.
FCC license and industry certifications such as ETA are a plus.
CET certifications through CompTIA Network+ and/or Security+ is highly desirable.
Legal authorization to work in the U.S. indefinitely is required. Employer work permit sponsorship is not available for this position.

Target Base Salary Range: $70,000 - 85,000 USD
Consistent with Motorola Solutions values and applicable law, we provide the following information to promote pay transparency and equity. Pay within this range varies and depends on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The actual offer will be based on the individual candidate.
