About the team and the role:
The Batch Operations team is at the center of how eBay’s global marketplace runs critical workflows at scale. As we modernize our Batch Platform from Broadcom Automic to Apache Airflow, we are building “Airflow as a Service” to empower hundreds of internal teams to orchestrate thousands of workflows across multiple marketplace domains.
In this Full Stack, platform-focused Software Engineer role, you will design and evolve the services, tools, and infrastructure that power eBay’s batch workflow automation.
What you will accomplish:
Develop, build, and improve the core services driving eBay’s workflow automation platform so it is reliable, scalable, and easy to embrace for thousands of internal applications.
Develop deep observability and monitoring capabilities that give partners clear insights into DAG and task execution, system health, and performance, improving incident detection and resolution times.
Create AI-powered tools and automation that streamline platform engineering workflows, reducing manual toil and accelerating how internal teams build, deploy, and operate their batch workloads.
Implement and continuously improve CI/CD pipelines (e.g., Jenkins, Tekton) that enable fast, safe, and repeatable releases of platform components across development, staging, and production.
Build, harden, and maintain containerized environments (Docker, Kubernetes), image repositories, and runtime infrastructure to ensure secure, performant, and compliant batch services.
Work alongside security, compliance, and engineering departments to ensure the platform meets eBay’s data protection, auditing, and regulatory standards. Support ongoing modernization to Apache Airflow.
What you will bring:
Proven full stack or backend engineering experience, with strong skills in Java and Spring Boot for services and REST APIs; experience with Node.js, Python, or shell scripting, and familiarity with modern frontend frameworks (such as React or Angular) is a plus.
Proven understanding of computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, design patterns, and layered architectures, and how to apply them to build reliable platform services.
Hands-on experience with software delivery practices such as unit and integration testing, build tools (for example, Maven, npm), logging, and supervising in production environments.
Exposure to workflow orchestration or automation technologies like Apache Airflow or DAG-based systems is required. Interest in crafting Airflow as a Service at enterprise scale is also needed.
Practical experience with modern DevOps and platform engineering, including Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, and Tekton or similar tools, plus an understanding of security, patching, and vulnerability management for containerized workloads.
Curiosity and learning approach, with excellent communication and collaboration skills, and experience or strong interest in AI/ML-enabled tooling (for example, MCP servers, AI agents, LLMs, or ML models) to improve engineering efficiency.
