CommonLit is a nonprofit education technology organization dedicated to ensuring that all students, especially students in Title I schools, graduate with the reading, writing, communication, and problem-solving skills they need to be successful in college and beyond. We envision a world where all students get the opportunity to have a world class education. We operate an online reading program for grades 3-12, www.CommonLit.org, that is used by teachers in over 90,000 American schools.

The Opportunity

CommonLit's Marketing team is responsible for engaging free users of our Text Library, generating new school leads to partner with us and adopt our curriculum (CommonLit 360), supporting the engagement and retention of current customers, and building CommonLit's brand through collateral and thought leadership.

Within the Marketing team, Growth Marketer (Community & Engagement) role is positioned to grow and engage CommonLit's free teacher user base, building the content, community, and programming that turns curious teachers into engaged advocates before a school ever becomes a sales-ready lead.

Our Growth Marketer (Community & Engagement) is obsessed with a simple question: what makes a free teacher stick around long enough to fall in love with CommonLit, and pull their school along with them? This role owns the earliest stage of a teacher's relationship with CommonLit, including sign-up, first use, and ongoing engagement, and partners closely with the Growth Marketer (Lead Generation), the Retention Marketer, Brand & Impact and the Product team to grow free-user advocacy into partnership opportunities.

Roles & Responsibilities

The primary function of the Growth Marketer (Community & Engagement) is to grow and deepen engagement among CommonLit's free teacher users. This includes building advocacy programs, teacher-facing content, community programming, and sharing insights with the broader Marketing team to support every stage of the funnel.

Strong execution of this role requires:

Grassroots Growth of Free Teacher Users:

  • Build advocacy playbooks, including in-app nurture motions developed in partnership with Product to deepen usage, and run surveys to understand what's working. Develop teacher-facing content and community programming that builds and nurtures power-users, including:

  • Free teacher-focused webinars

  • Newsletters with teaching tips tailored to specific grade bands

  • Blog content in service of usage and engagement, not immediate lead conversion

  • Conferences, regional and virtual meetups, and roundtables

  • CommonLit appearances, placements, and ads in outlets like EdWeek and Chalkbeat

  • Organic social content (Reddit and others)

  • A long-term ambassador program for CommonLit's most engaged teachers

  • Content Strategy & Cross-function Insights:

  • Own blog maintenance and content cadence.

  • Partner with the Retention Marketer, Brand & Impact to leverage customer testimonials for top-of-funnel storytelling.

  • Work cross-team with colleagues who talk directly to users (Sales, Support, Product) to exchange insights and use it to grow our audience.

  • Share insights with the broader Marketing team to support every stage of the funnel, for example giving Sales fresh angles for teacher-level leads.

  • Partner with the Performance Marketing Specialist on the hand-off between free-user activation and conversion, including strategic lead gen pushes in blog and newsletter when appropriate.

  • Performance & Reporting:

  • Report on free-user engagement and advocacy metrics, including webinar attendance and satisfaction, newsletter open/click-through rates, blog engagement, organic social performance, and ambassador program growth and participation.

  • Partner cross-functionally to track how traffic, sign-ups, sign-ins, and top-of-funnel engagement translates into conversion downstream.

  • Bring a learner’s mindset to identify what’s working, retire what isn’t, and keep testing new content, community, and advocacy approaches.

  • Additional Projects as determined by the team

  • 2-4 years of experience in content marketing, community/growth marketing, or a related field required
