About Owner.com
Owner is the AI growth system for local restaurants.
Our AI continuously improves SEO, marketing, and online ordering to grow first-party orders. Unlike other companies that force small business owners to master their software to drive sales, Owner gives them a proven system run by experts.
Owner is like having an army of engineers and marketers on your side, just like the big chains.
Our vision
We’re starting by helping independent restaurants succeed online.
But it’s not just restaurants that need our help. Most local businesses are struggling with these same problems. Huge technology corporations are taking their customers, bleeding their profits, and making it hard for them to survive.
Once we nail the solution for restaurants – we’ll scale it into every other local business type.
In the future we envision, tens of millions of local business owners will use our technology to succeed in the digital age.

Our traction
Since 2020, we've generated tens of millions in revenue and processed over half a billion dollars of online orders. 1 in 5 Americans have used an Owner.com website.
More importantly, we’ve helped over 20,000 restaurant owners, and saved them nearly $200 million in fees.
Our team
Our team is now in the low hundreds. We’ve got top talent from the most successful companies in SMB software, including: Shopify, HubSpot, DoorDash, ServiceTitan, Rappi, Faire and Stripe.
We’ll be scaling even faster in 2026 to keep pace with our customer growth.
Where we work
Owner is a remote-first, global company headquartered in San Francisco, with a sales hub in Toronto. For a few of our roles we prioritize in-person collaboration at one of our office locations. Most of our teammates are distributed throughout the globe. Please review the role description and discuss with your recruiter for more details on location!
Why we're looking for you
Owner is hiring our first Head of Legal to build, scale, and lead the Legal function from the ground up. As our business accelerates - expanding product surfaces, navigating regulatory expectations, entering strategic partnerships, and shaping the future of restaurant technology - we need a legal leader who can operate with speed, clarity, and judgment.
This is a foundational role. You will own our full legal stack: corporate, compliance, employment, IP, and litigation. You will drive our most sensitive initiatives as the accountable DRI, while also architecting the systems, processes, and norms that allow Legal to scale. You will be supported by excellent outside counsel across domains, but your superpower is knowing when to leverage firms versus when to move fast internally. Success in this role looks like being a proactive, strategic, and embedded legal partner who sees around corners and builds durable foundations.
This role is ideal for a builder with both firm and in-house experience who is energized by being hands-on, creating structure from ambiguity, and shaping a world-class Legal function from day one.
Bay Area or NYC preferred; open to remote.
The impact you will have
- Build and scale Owner’s Legal function as the company’s first full-time legal hire, establishing the frameworks, tooling, and operating norms that enable rapid growth.
- Serve as strategic DRI on the company’s most sensitive and high-impact matters, including litigation strategy, negotiations, regulatory posture, and complex commercial agreements.
- Partner closely with Product and Engineering to ensure new products, pricing models, integrations, and financial infrastructure are built with compliance and risk minimization in mind.
- Design scalable systems across contracting, compliance, employment, corporate governance, privacy, and IP, ensuring clarity, speed, and auditability.
- Lead Owner’s litigation strategy end-to-end, including outside counsel engagement, negotiation posture, documentation, and executive communication.
- Proactively identify risk areas across the business and build policies, processes, and internal education to mitigate them before they become issues.
- Support strategic partnerships/transactions, board matters, fundraising, corporate governance, and investor communications.
- Establish the legal architecture needed for Owner’s next phase of scale, creating the foundations for a function that can grow alongside the business.
- Earn deep trust across the organization by combining clarity of judgment with a bias to action, moving fast while elevating Owner’s risk standards.
Who you’ll work with
- Report directly to the CFO while partnering with leadership teams across Engineering, Product & Design (EPD), GTM, People, Finance, Ops, and the Executive team.
- Manage and direct a network of top-tier outside counsel across corporate, regulatory, product, employment, and litigation.
- Act as a strategic partner to the CEO on sensitive legal negotiations and litigation matters, with an expectation of progressing conversations independently.
What we’re looking for
- 8–10 years of legal experience, ideally with experience in both law firm and in-house environments.
- A full-stack legal athlete with experience across commercial, corporate, compliance, IP, employment, and litigation management.
- A builder mentality - excited to design legal systems, implement processes, and establish standards.
- A proactive operator with a strong bias to action, capable of serving as DRI for mission-critical company priorities.
- Exceptional judgment and the ability to see around corners, providing not just legal answers but strategic guidance aligned with Owner’s long-term goals.
- Comfort working in fast-moving, ambiguous environments where decisions must be made quickly and with incomplete information.
- Ability to partner closely with product and engineering teams, translating product risks into crisp decisions and enabling rapid innovation.
- A future leader motivated to scale the Legal team after establishing foundational systems.
Pay and benefits
- The estimated base salary range for this role is $225,000-$275,000.
- Other benefits include comprehensive health coverage, remote-first workplace, unlimited PTO - plus extra fun perks!
