Infrastructure Engineer for Innovation Lab

QED (https://qed.ai) is a tech company focused on public health,  agricultural development, and education in Sub-Saharan Africa. We build the digital infrastructure and AI used at the intersection of aid and scientific inquiry, including surveillance of HIV and malaria, and nutrient analysis of crops and soils, working at national-scale in several African countries. Our funding comes from multiple philanthropic and governmental organizations, including the Global Fund and the Gates Foundation.

We are looking for an infrastructure engineer to join our Innovation Lab, which focuses on rapid prototyping and R&D. We build new products to disrupt the status quo and remind everyone what tech was made for --- improving the lives of everyday people! The position can be remote, with periodic visits encouraged. Full-time engagement is preferred, but can start with part-time. Your responsibilities would include:

• development and maintenance of computing infrastructure enabling our team to rapidly develop and deploy software prototypes, in both global and localized environments

• management of servers and clusters, on public cloud, private cloud, and bare metal servers

• design, configuration, assembly, testing, installation, and optimization of bare metal servers, including optimal configuration of GPU systems for tuning and deployment of large language models

• physical inspection and technical advisory on constructing data centers in third-world countries with poor infrastructure, to help them achieve data sovereignty

• construction of monitoring and alerting systems to rapidly detect and respond to lapses in performance

Desired skills include:

• +3 years of experience

• automation / declarative oriented mindset

• broad knowledge of technology – including Linux internals, networking, databases, high level hardware performance, containers, performance tuning, security

• experience with kubernetes

• experience with Linux-based system administration for companies and data centers

• strong background in software engineering, version control, writing readable code and tests, robust design, and basic data structures and algorithms

• experience with optimizing GPU clusters

• working proficiency in speaking, reading, and typing English

• logical reasoning and ability to express ideas clearly, both orally and written

• willingness and interest in working with people from other cultures

• emotional resilience and social intelligence

• and you have to care about the work that you do

Below are additional skills that are a bonus, but are not required:

• +8 years of experience

• knowledge of high performance computing (HPC)

• practical electrical engineering knowledge, including power calculations and the selection and installation of batteries, inverters, solar panels, cables and trunking, satellite internet, and other hardware to make fully localized deployments possible

• interest in traveling the world and engaging in at least short-term deployments to countries that require our assistance

• experience with Terraform or similar IaaC

• ethical hacking experience

• experience with programming and/or math competitions

• domain knowledge and/or interest in the sustainable development goals, particularly in public health, agriculture, and assisting developing countries
