At Horace Mann, we’re committed to helping our employees grow so they can better serve educators and their communities. We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Instructional Designer to lead the design and delivery of engaging, performance-driven digital learning solutions.

In this role, you will be a partner with business leaders and subject matter experts to transform complex content into interactive learning experiences that drive measurable behavior change—not just course completion. You’ll operate with a high degree of autonomy, managing projects end-to-end while continuously improving how learning impacts performance.

Job Responsibilities

Design & Development

  • Design and develop interactive eLearning solutions using modern tools (Articulate 360, video, AI-based tools, etc.).
  • Create scenario-based, microlearning, and blended learning experiences that drive real-world application.
  • Ensure content is user-friendly, accessible, and aligned to business outcomes.

Project Ownership

  • Lead eLearning projects from concept through delivery with minimal supervision.
  • Manage timelines, stakeholders, and quality to ensure successful execution.
  • Conduct quality assurance reviews and implement continuous improvements.

Stakeholder Partnership

  • Collaborate with subject matter experts and business partners to identify learning needs.
  • Translate business challenges into effective learning strategies and solutions.
  • Serve as a liaison across teams to ensure alignment, clarity, and successful delivery.

Continuous Improvement & Innovation

  • Evaluate learning effectiveness and recommend improvements based on data and feedback.
  • Identify opportunities to enhance the learner experience across LMS/LXP platforms.
  • Explore and implement emerging technologies to improve engagement and scalability.

What Success Looks Like

  • Learning solutions that clearly connect to behavior change and business outcomes
  • Increased learner engagement and on-the-job application
  • Strong partnerships where stakeholders view you as a trusted advisor—not just a content developer

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Instructional Design, Education, Learning Technologies, or a related field
  • 3–5 years of experience in instructional design or corporate training

Skills & Experience

  • Proficiency with modern eLearning tools, including:
    • Articulate 360 (Storyline & Rise)
    • Synthesia (AI video creation)
    • Camtasia or similar video editing tools
    • Adobe Creative Suite (or equivalent)
  • Experience designing interactive, scenario-based, and microlearning experiences
  • Strong understanding of instructional design principles, adult learning theory, and performance measurement
  • Experience with LMS platforms and familiarity with Learning Experience Platforms (LXP)
  • Working knowledge of SCORM, xAPI, and learning analytics
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Ability to work independently and drive projects with minimal supervision

Pay Range:

  • $66,500.00 - $92,000.00/annually

Salary is commensurate to experience, location, etc.

Horace Mann was founded in 1945 by two Springfield, Illinois, teachers who saw a need for quality, affordable auto insurance for teachers. Since then, we’ve broadened our mission to helping all educators protect what they have today and prepare for a successful tomorrow.  And with our broadened mission has come corporate growth:  We serve more than 4,100 school districts nationwide, we’re publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange (symbol: HMN) and we have more than $12 billion in assets.

We’re motivated by the fact that educators take care of our children’s future, and we believe they deserve someone to look after theirs.  We help educators identify their financial goals and develop plans to achieve them.  This includes insurance to protect what they have today and financial products to help them prepare for their future. Our tailored offerings include special rates and benefits for educators.
