Who we are About Stripe

Stripe is a financial infrastructure platform for businesses. Millions of companies - from the world’s largest enterprises to the most ambitious startups - use Stripe to accept payments, grow their revenue, and accelerate new business opportunities. Our mission is to increase the GDP of the internet, and we have a staggering amount of work ahead. That means you have an unprecedented opportunity to put the global economy within everyone's reach while doing the most important work of your career.

About the team

Stripe is a technology company that builds economic infrastructure for the internet. Businesses of all sizes — from new startups to public companies — use our software to accept payments and run technically sophisticated financial operations in more than 100 countries. Stripes work on some of the hardest technical, business, and regulatory problems around, and we’re looking for an amazing IP lawyer to join our IP team. In this role you will work with talented people throughout the company to help develop and protect Stripe’s intellectual property, with a focus on trademarks and copyrights, and will deal with a diverse set of matters that straddle financial services, business processes, and technology.

What you’ll do

We’re looking for a motivated individual to join our IP team to serve as the primary lawyer for our trademark, copyright, and domain-name matters. The ideal candidate is passionate about Stripe’s mission of helping businesses grow and thrive. We’re looking for someone who is a team player and willing to jump in on tasks of any size. Experience managing trademark and copyright portfolios and handling trademark and copyright enforcement (including online and domain-name enforcement) is a must. A background in technology, payments, and/or financial services is not required, but is a plus.

Responsibilities
  • Counsel on the development, acquisition, and protection of all forms of intellectual property at Stripe, with an emphasis on trademarks, copyrights, and domain names.
  • Help prepare and prosecute US and international trademark and copyright applications, making judicious use of outside counsel.
  • Perform trademark clearance for new use cases, including new product launches.
  • Handle trademark and copyright enforcement, including online enforcement and UDRP proceedings.
  • Manage US and international trademark and copyright disputes, including Oppositions and Cancellations.
  • Negotiate co-existence agreements, and advise on licensing and other trademark and copyright commercial terms.
  • Provide advice and training on copyright matters, particularly those related to Stripe Press.
  • Work closely with other members of Stripe’s Legal and Risk teams to investigate and act on notices received as part of Stripe’s IP Notice Process.
  • Support IP matters relating to M&A.
Who you are

We're looking for someone who meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the role. If you meet these requirements, you are encouraged to apply. The preferred qualifications are a bonus, not a requirement.

Minimum requirements
  • 7+ years’ experience as a US trademark attorney. In-house experience is a big plus.
  • Admission to practice law in one or more US states.
  • Strong project-management skills, with a strict attention to detail, and an ability to work under tight deadlines.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, and an ability to clearly explain complex concepts, even to non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent judgment, and a willingness to make difficult decisions in the face of ambiguity and imperfect information.
Preferred qualifications
  •  A background in software, payments, and/or financial services.
