Litigation Paralegal

Position Classification

Non-Exempt (eligible for overtime under FLSA)

Position Summary

The Litigation Paralegal supports attorneys in all phases of the litigation process, from case inception through trial and appeal. This role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Work is performed under attorney supervision with a high degree of independence on routine matters.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Case Management and Strategy Support

  • Assist with case management from intake through resolution
  • Maintain comprehensive case files with focus on substantive organization and usability
  • Track case developments and maintain case status reports
  • Organize evidence, exhibits, and case materials for attorney review
  • Maintain chronologies, fact summaries, and case timelines
  • Assist attorneys with case strategy and analysis

Pleadings and Motion Practice

  • Draft pleadings, motions, and legal memoranda under attorney supervision
  • Prepare responses to motions and oppositions
  • Draft discovery requests and responses (interrogatories, requests for production, requests for admission)
  • Prepare subpoenas and coordinate service
  • Format and finalize legal documents in accordance with court rules and firm standards
  • E-file documents in state and federal courts using electronic filing systems

Discovery Management

  • Coordinate and prepare discovery (requests, responses, document production)
  • Review, organize, and summarize documents for case strategy and trial preparation
  • Assist with document review for relevance, privilege, and responsiveness
  • Prepare privilege logs and document indices
  • Organize and manage large-scale document productions
  • Coordinate with vendors for e-discovery and document management services
  • Track discovery deadlines and ensure timely compliance

Legal Research and Analysis

  • Conduct legal and factual research using legal databases (Westlaw, LexisNexis) and public records
  • Analyze and summarize case law, statutes, and regulations
  • Prepare legal memoranda and research summaries
  • Assist with cite-checking and bluebooking briefs and memoranda
  • Research procedural rules and filing requirements

Deposition and Trial Preparation

  • Assist with deposition preparation including outlines, exhibits, and witness coordination
  • Prepare deposition summaries and indices
  • Organize deposition transcripts and exhibits
  • Coordinate expert witnesses, consultants, and vendors
  • Prepare trial binders, exhibit lists, and witness lists
  • Organize trial materials including demonstrative exhibits and technology presentations
  • Assist with witness preparation and coordination
  • Attend depositions, hearings, and trials as needed to provide support to attorneys
  • Prepare post-trial motions and assist with appeals coordination

Client and Stakeholder Communication

  • Communicate with clients, opposing counsel, courts, and vendors regarding substantive legal matters
  • Respond to client inquiries regarding case status and legal strategy
  • Coordinate with co-counsel and experts on case-related matters
  • Maintain professional relationships with court personnel and opposing counsel

Deadline and Docket Management

  • Manage and track deadlines, court dates, and filings in firm docketing systems and shared calendars
  • Monitor court dockets for case updates and new filings
  • Ensure compliance with court rules, filing deadlines, and procedural requirements
  • Coordinate scheduling of depositions, hearings, and other case events

Document Management and Recordkeeping

  • Follow firm SOPs for document naming and storage
  • Leverage NetDocs to manage files
  • Utilize approved templates
  • Manage attorney signatures for filings
  • Track expense reports and credit card receipts; file in accordance with firm standards and processes

Physical Requirements and Work Environment

 
  • Primarily sedentary office work with occasional standing, walking, and lifting up to 10 pounds
  • Extended periods of computer use and detailed document review
  • May require frequent overtime during trial preparation, discovery deadlines, or other time-sensitive matters
  • May require occasional travel to courts, depositions, or client offices
  • Standard professional office environment; hybrid remote/in-office arrangements may be available per firm policy

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree and/or Paralegal Certificate from an ABA-approved program preferred

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years of litigation paralegal experience in a law firm environment
  • Practice-specific experience may be required for specialized litigation (e.g., complex commercial litigation, employment, personal injury, class actions)
  • Experience with federal and state court procedures and rules
  • Experience with discovery, depositions, and trial preparation
  • Multi-jurisdictional litigation experience preferred

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong knowledge of court rules and procedures (state and federal)
  • Familiarity with Federal Rules of Civil Procedure and local court rules
  • Advanced proficiency in legal research tools and databases (Westlaw, LexisNexis)
  • Exceptional organizational and analytical skills with strong attention to detail
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • High level of discretion, professionalism, and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Experience with legal practice management software and document management systems
  • Experience with litigation support software (e.g., Relativity, Concordance, CaseMap, Summation) preferred
  • Experience with e-filing platforms and court electronic filing systems (CM/ECF, state portals)
  • Ability to manage multiple complex cases simultaneously and meet tight deadlines
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to remain calm and organized under pressure
  • Demonstrated proficiency with emerging legal technology tools, including AI-assisted research platforms and e-discovery applications
