Self Financial is a venture-backed, high-growth FinTech company with a mission to increase economic inclusion and financial resilience by empowering people to build credit and build savings.

We're looking for people who share our passion and are driven to tackle challenges, find solutions and make the financial space better for the communities we serve.

Our team is passionate about challenging the status quo of the credit industry by providing people accessible tools to take control of their credit. Executing on our mission requires deep collaboration across our teams to ensure our products reach the people who can benefit from them the most, particularly the 100 million+ Americans who have no or low credit.

We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. To that end, we seek to recruit, develop and retain the most talented people from a diverse candidate pool.

The role
We’re hiring a Data Engineering Manager to lead a high-performing team focused on trusted, timely, and well-governed data. You’ll modernize pipelines, strengthen quality and observability, and scale our warehouse and transformations to support product growth and enable key metrics for business. This role reports to the Director of Engineering.
Why this role matters

You’ll raise the reliability and usability of the data that fuel credit-building, savings, and customer insights—cutting time-to-insight, reducing incidents, and improving compliance and cost efficiency.

What you’ll do

  • Lead & develop the team: Hire, coach, and grow data engineers; set clear goals and feedback loops.
  • Modernize pipelines: Replace legacy/fragile jobs with resilient ELT/ETL; standardize orchestration, transformations, and data contracts; retire tech debt.
  • Model & transform data: Establish durable dimensional models and incremental patterns; improve performance.
  • Quality & observability: Implement testing, validation, and anomaly detection; define SLAs/SLOs for freshness, availability, and accuracy; run incident response and post-mortems.
  • Lineage & governance: Stand up lineage, cataloging, ownership, and documentation; enforce access controls, PII handling, retention, and auditability
  • Cost & performance: Optimize workload management, storage layout, and query efficiency while maintaining reliability.
  • Partner across Self: Translate business goals into a clear data roadmap with Analytics, Fraud, Accounting, Product, and ML; communicate trade-offs, risks, and progress.
  • Measure impact: Set and track team OKRs (pipeline success rate, freshness SLOs, MTTR/MTTD, stakeholder satisfaction).

What we’re looking for

  • 6+ years in data engineering (or adjacent), including 2+ years managing or leading engineers.
  • Expert SQL and strong Python.
  • Hands-on experience building/operating ELT/ETL and orchestration (e.g., Airflow or equivalent).
  • Cloud data warehousing (Redshift/BigQuery/Snowflake) and modern transformation frameworks (e.g., dbt or equivalent).
  • Solid data modeling fundamentals and performance tuning.
  • Experience implementing data quality, observability, and lineage; running on-call and incident processes.
  • Ability to convert ambiguous business needs into a prioritized roadmap; excellent communication and stakeholder management.

How we work

  • Outcome-oriented delivery with strong engineering fundamentals.
  • Security, privacy, and governance are built-in.
  • We value documentation, ownership, and continuous improvement.

Base salary is $159,000-212,000 annually.  Individual pay is based on factors unique to each candidate, including skill set, experience, and other job-related reasons.
