Why Join Q2?

Q2 is a leading provider of digital banking and lending solutions to banks, credit unions, alternative finance companies, and fintechs in the U.S. and internationally. Our mission is simple: build strong and diverse communities through innovative financial technology—and we do that by empowering our people to help create success for our customers.

What Makes Q2 Special?

Being as passionate about our people as we are about our mission. We celebrate our employees in many ways, including our “Circle of Awesomeness” award ceremony and day of employee celebration among others! We invest in the growth and development of our team members through ongoing learning opportunities, mentorship programs, internal mobility, and meaningful leadership relationships. We also know that nothing builds trust and collaboration like having fun. We hold an annual Dodgeball for Charity event at our Q2 Stadium in Austin, inviting other local companies to play, and community organizations we support to raise money and awareness together.

Our Team

The Targeted Experiences team builds and evolves SMART, Q2’s personalization and targeting platform for digital banking.

SMART turns behavioral, transactional, and partner data into actionable insights that can be activated across digital banking experiences and external systems. Beyond building the platform itself, the team also owns partner enablement — ensuring SMART is reliable, well-documented, and ready for consumption by external developers, fintech partners, and marketing platforms.

The team is intentionally multi-disciplinary and owns the stack end to end, bringing together engineers with backgrounds in backend and frontend software engineering, data engineering, and data science. As SMART evolves, the team’s scope will continue to expand beyond a single product toward broader targeted and personalized experience capabilities across Q2’s ecosystem.

The Role

As an Engineering Manager on the Targeted Experiences team, you will lead a multi-disciplinary group responsible for building cloud-native, data-driven platform services that power SMART and future targeted experience capabilities across Q2.

This role requires strong technical fluency across both software and data systems. You are not expected to be the system architect or to design models yourself, but you must understand how modern data products are built, tested, deployed, and monitored in production — and be able to challenge decisions when needed.

The team already has strong engineers and well-established delivery processes. Your role is to raise the technical bar, improve execution efficiency, and ensure the platform is built and operated like critical infrastructure, not to reinvent process from scratch.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and support a multi-disciplinary team of software engineers, data scientists and data engineers owning SMART end to end.
  • Partner closely with Product Management to translate strategy into scalable, executable platform capabilities.
  • Ensure data products are production-grade, with appropriate testing, validation, monitoring, and alerting.
  • Own production outcomes, including system reliability, data correctness, model behavior, and operational readiness.
  • Guide the evolution of the architecture toward modern, scalable, and maintainable cloud-native patterns.
  • Ensure the platform is ready for external consumption, including partner integrations, documentation quality, and developer experience.
  • Enable and amplify senior engineers and data scientists, supporting technical leadership without micromanagement.
  • Improve efficiency pragmatically — modernizing practices where it creates leverage without disrupting what already works.
  • Collaborate across Q2 with Digital Banking, Innovation Studio, Fraud, and partner-facing teams to ensure tight integration across the ecosystem.
What Success Looks Like
  • SMART operates as a reliable platform infrastructure, not a fragile collection of services.
  • Data pipelines, traits, and models are tested, observable, and trusted.
  • Issues are surfaced through monitoring and alerts, not customer escalations.
  • Engineers and data scientists feel clear ownership of outcomes, not just deliverables.
  • The team is positioned to take on broader targeted experience capabilities as scope expands.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data Science, or equivalent experience.
  • Typically 6+ years of industry experience, including time building backend, platform, or data-intensive systems.
  • Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS preferred).
  • Experience collaborating closely with data scientists and data engineers in production environments.
  • Familiarity with personalization, analytics, or marketing data platforms is a plus.

RESPONSIBILITIES• Mentor engineers through coaching, 1:1s, and career planning • Collaborate across Product, Design, and Engineering teams • Drive code reviews, architecture planning, and system monitoring • Manage Agile ceremonies including planning, retrospectives, backlog grooming • Champion innovation and continuous improvement • Support hiring and onboarding of new engineers EXPERIENCE & KNOWLEDGE • 6+ years of related experience; advanced degree with 4+ years acceptable • 1-2 years managing and developing employees • Strong Agile delivery and project management experience • Expertise in enterprise software deployment and system reliability • Strong leadership and mentoring track record

This position requires fluent written and oral communication in English.
