Job Summary:
The Sr. Technical Lead – Protection & Controls leads P&C engineering team responsible for delivering high‑quality P&C designs for substation projects. The Sr. Technical Lead ensures that all P&C engineering work meets industry standards, regulatory requirements, and client expectations while driving innovation, efficiency, and team growth.
What you'll do:
- Oversee development of protection and control engineering packages for substation projects
- Provide expert guidance on relay protection schemes, SCADA, automation, and communication system design.
- Approve and stamp engineering deliverables as needed (one‑line diagrams, three‑line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, relay settings, control wiring, I/O lists, etc.).
- Ensure compliance with NERC, IEEE, IEC, and utility‑specific standards.
- Lead technical reviews, QA/QC processes, and design optimization initiatives.
Project & Delivery Management
- Coordinate with civil, structural, physical engineering teams to ensure integrated design.
- Support project managers with technical input, risk identification, and mitigation strategies.
- Oversee resource planning, workload forecasting, and project staffing.
Team Leadership & Development
- Lead, mentor, and develop a team of P&C engineers, designers, and technicians.
- Establish training programs, technical standards, and best practices.
- Conduct performance evaluations and support career progression.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
- Serve as the primary technical point of contact for key utility and industrial clients.
- Participate in proposal development, client presentations, and contract negotiations.
- Build long‑term client relationships and identify opportunities for new or expanded services.
- Represent the company in industry forums, technical committees, and conferences.
Business & Strategic Leadership
- Contribute to annual business planning, revenue forecasting, and strategic growth initiatives.
- Support development of new service offerings in grid modernization, automation, and digital substations.
- Drive process improvements, design automation, and adoption of emerging technologies.
- Ensure compliance with corporate policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.

- This position pays between $100K and $180K annually and is an exempt position. Benefits offered include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and 401(k) plan with company match. Also offered are tuition reimbursement, voluntary life, disability, critical illness, accident and hospitalization plans. HSA or FSA medical accounts and FSA dependent care and transportation/parking accounts are also available. These benefits are subject to employee contribution amounts generally set annually. Full-time employees are eligible to earn PTO hours. May be eligible for discretionary bonus as determined by the company.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (Power emphasis preferred).
- 10+ years of experience in protection & controls engineering.
- Strong understanding of transmission and substation protection schemes, relay logic, and control systems.
- Proven leadership experience managing engineering teams and complex projects.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within 6 months.
- Proficiency with industry tools (e.g., SEL AcSELerator, ASPEN, CAPE, ETAP, AutoCAD, MicroStation).
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in electrical engineering or engineering management.
- Experience working in a consulting engineering environment.
- Familiarity with utility standards and major OEM equipment
