The Part-Time Student Program is primarily designed to augment the Company's regular full-time staff and is for students who work in parallel to their school schedule YEAR-ROUND.
Your Responsibilities
As a Part-Time Student - Product Engineer for JD Product Engineering Location located in Ames, IA OR Waterloo, IA, you will:
  • The work will entail modeling physical systems such as hydraulics, electrical circuits, and controls systems in Matlab/Simulink/SimScape.
  • Work with design engineers, embedded engineers, and control engineers to tackle some of the most challenging problems at John Deere. You will use simulation to architect, optimize and develop the very best design possible for our customers.

What Skills You Need• Ideally you will be pursuing a degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Computer/Software, Industrial, or Agricultural Engineering, or equivalent; others may apply• Must be registered as a full-time student at Iowa State University (ISU)• Graduation date of December 2026 or later• Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above• Available to work approximately 10-20 hours/week onsite during the academic year• Available to work approximately 40 hours/week onsite during the summer• Available to commute to the work location in Ames, Iowa, year-round• Strong understanding and intuition for physics and dynamics• Effective communication skills both oral and written• Strong problem-solving skills and inquisitive nature for resolving complex problems
What Makes You Stand Out• Knowledge or work experience in production agriculture or construction equipment• Experience in product engineering (product design, product testing, software testing)• 3D modeling experience (Creo preferred)• Programming experience (MATLAB, C++, Python, Visual Basic, Arduino, Raspberry Pi)• Model Based Software Development Experience (Simulink, Simscape, LabVIEW, Amesim)• Data analytics experience (Python, R, SQL)• Strong familiarity with Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word, SharePoint, or Power BI• Leadership experience
Education
Ideally you will have a degree or equivalent related work experience in the following:• Must be registered as a full-time student at Iowa State University (ISU)• Graduation date of May 2026 or later• Cumulative GPA of 3.0 or above
