Marathon Petroleum Corporation
Planning & Optimization Engineer III/Senior Planning & Optimization Engineer
At MPC, we’re committed to being a great place to work – one that welcomes new ideas, encourages diverse perspectives, develops our people, and fosters a collaborative team environment.
Position Summary
This Planning & Optimization Engineer position is an individual contributor role within the Standardization & Governance team of the Value Chain Optimization (VCO) organization. The position plays a critical role in defining and advancing next-generation optimization model frameworks, enabling consistency, comparability, and scalability across assets and regions. The role partners closely with Operations Research and planning & scheduling organizations to align model structures, assumptions, and configurations with approved technical standards.
Success in this role depends on deep technical understanding of optimization models, strong standardization discipline, and the ability to work cross‑functionally to resolve model deviations and sustain high‑quality, governed analytical capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
Defines, maintains, and evolves standard modeling frameworks, structures, and requirements for enterprise planning and optimization tools (e.g., Aspen PIMS, Aspen APS, Aspen PSCP, AIMMS), in partnership with the Operations Research team.
Works closely with planning, scheduling, and optimization teams to align model structures, assumptions, and configurations with approved standards.
Leads efforts to harmonize model logic, constraints, and inputs across regions and assets to enable consistency, comparability, and scalability.
Provides technical guidance and hands‑on support during deployment and configuration of standardized models at regional and asset levels.
Ensures model configurations comply with approved technical standards, coordinating with governance and standards coordination roles for formal change‑control routing and documentation.
Participates in model exception and deviation reviews, providing technical analysis and recommendations for resolution or escalation through governance channels.
Documents model assumptions, configurations, constraints, and decision logic to support transparency, auditability, and repeatability.
Identifies opportunities to improve model robustness, maintainability, and performance within established standardization frameworks, escalating ideas that require non‑standard approaches to the innovation team.
Minimum Education
Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Operations Research, or a related field.
Minimum Experience
Four (4) or more years of experience working with planning and optimization models in tools such as Aspen PIMS, Aspen APS, Aspen PSCP, AIMMS, or similar platforms.
Skills
Optimization Modeling & Platforms – Deep technical expertise in enterprise planning and optimization tools and their underlying modeling constructs.
Standards & Change‑Control Discipline – Strong ability to apply and maintain standards, version control, and change‑control rigor in technical environments.
Systems & Model Integration – Ability to understand end‑to‑end model interdependencies and ensure consistency across complex systems.
Technical Collaboration – Effective at working with planners, schedulers, optimization teams, and Operations Research partners to resolve model issues and align on standards.
As an energy industry leader, our career opportunities fuel personal and professional growth.
