What are we looking for?

We are seeking a Principal Architect to join our Developer Platform organization. In this role, you'll be our Developer Platform's technical leader and visionary, responsible for designing and driving our "North Star" architecture. You will be a hands-on leader who can translate complex concepts into a clear technical strategy, ensuring a coherent and consistent platform for all S1 engineers.

What will you do?
  • Architect the Future: Design and drive the end-to-end architecture of our Developer Platform. This includes seamlessly integrating with key organisations like Quality Assurance (including Performance), Security, IT, and SRE.
  • Define the Vision: Create and clearly communicate the technical concepts and standards. You'll set up the "rules of the game" that allow individual teams to innovate and bring their best ideas to life while maintaining architectural consistency.
  • Provide Technical Leadership: Serve as a go-to technical advisor for our most senior colleagues. You'll advise on approaches and review solutions, going as deep as necessary to ensure a coherent platform.
  • Be a Bridge Builder: Act as a critical link between the platform's underlying infrastructure and the developers who use it. You'll focus on creating clear standards and ensuring an excellent developer experience.
  • Stay Hands-On: While your main focus is architecture, we value strong engineering skills. You should be able to prototype your suggestions to bring ideas to life. We don't expect this on a daily basis, but the ability to do so will be a significant benefit.
What skills and knowledge should you bring?
  • Deep Architectural Expertise: You have a proven track record of designing and delivering complex, large-scale platforms that meet the needs of the business and are highly reliable.
  • Strong Communication Skills: You can clearly articulate and evangelize technical concepts and strategies to a wide range of audiences, from senior leadership to individual engineers.
  • Hands-On Engineering Skills: A solid background in software engineering and coding experience is highly valued.
  • Collaborative Leadership: You are a natural technical leader who can influence and inspire highly senior individual contributors to deliver consistent, high-quality work.
  • Big Picture Thinking: You can design a platform from end-to-end, understanding how all the pieces fit together while empowering individual teams to deliver great work.

Do you have what it takes to define the future of our Developer Platform? We'd love to hear from you.

  • US Citizen.
  • 10+ years of experience in Architecture, as a Technical Lead, or equivalent experience.
  • Proven Track Record: You have built high-scale APIs used by other teams or companies. You've demonstrated the ability to apply broad technical knowledge to meet business requirements and resolve technical constraints, helping to shape and enhance requirements based on those constraints.
  • Deep Technical Expertise:
    • Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure, data privacy, and security.
    • Expertise with public cloud technologies; AWS is required, GCP is strongly preferred.
    • Deep expertise with multi-cloud strategies and operations.
    • Hands-on experience with Kubernetes, DevOps, and CI/CD tools (e.g., GitHub, Docker container registry, Jenkins/GitHub Actions, ArgoCD).
    • Practical experience with cloud automation and configuration management tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible, Chef, Puppet, etc.).
  • Process & Collaboration:
    • Proven knowledge of the agile development process and DevOps practices.
    • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and with all levels of the organization, including technical and non-technical team members.
    • Strong communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with broad system design across multiple areas of technology, including SaaS platforms, on-prem deployments, and big data.
  • Detail-oriented with strong technical documentation skills.
  • Possesses strong cloud security expertise
  • Experience leading a team through system architecture design.
