QA Automation Engineer (IJ Platform / Core team)

The Core team handles the foundational pieces of the IntelliJ Platform, including the editor, indexing, settings, and plugins. These systems are highly complex and used across all JetBrains IDEs, meaning your work directly impacts the daily workflows of millions of developers. You’ll take full ownership of the QA domain for this team, ensuring the stability of both established components and temporary cross-team projects. You’ll work closely with developers to investigate technical problems, coordinate testing efforts, and ensure we ship reliable, high-quality features.

Day to day, you will:

• Develop and maintain UI, end-to-end, functional, and integration tests across Linux, Windows, and macOS.
• Analyze test failures and track test coverage.
• Test new functionality, focusing on complex scenarios, edge cases, and potential coverage gaps.
• Improve test diagnostics, frameworks, and CI/CD pipelines to reduce flakiness and increase reliability.
• Mentor a junior QA engineer by helping plan tasks, reviewing work, and answering technical questions.
• Communicate risks, roadblocks, and investigation results clearly to the development team.
• Own your QA domain end to end, proactively identifying priorities, planning your work, and driving quality initiatives.

• A strong sense of ownership over the quality and stability of complex systems.
• The ability to navigate incomplete requirements and find the information needed to move forward.
• A practical approach to problem-solving, with a focus on resolving issues independently.
• A collaborative mindset for working closely with developers and other cross-functional teams.
• An eye for spotting risks, missing scenarios, and areas for process improvement.
• A willingness to guide and support less-experienced engineers.

• An extensive background in software quality assurance and test automation.
• Strong programming skills to develop, maintain, and debug UI tests.
• Proficiency with testing frameworks like JUnit or TestNG.
• The proven ability to investigate and troubleshoot failures across products, infrastructure, and environments.
• Fluency in written and spoken English.

You’ve established a reliable, stable testing infrastructure for the Core team, significantly reducing test flakiness and improving diagnostic capabilities. You proactively identify quality risks before releases, keep developers unblocked, and ensure the junior engineers you mentor are confidently taking on more complex tasks.
