LocationWe are hiring for this role to be based in the United States or Canada. This is a remote role unless you fall within the following parameters. If you live within approximately 50 miles of our San Mateo, CA or Provo, UT office, the position follows a hybrid schedule with in-office days on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
About The Role
As an R&D Attorney, you will shape the accuracy, reliability, and quality of AI outputs that hundreds of legal teams use in daily work. You will use your legal experience to guide GC AI toward practical excellence by designing legal evaluations, improving system prompts, validating outputs against real-world legal standards, and translating substantive expertise into product improvements that build user trust.At a fast-moving, product-market-fit stage startup, your work will help raise the bar for how AI is tested in legal workflows and define the future of the leading legal AI platform for in-house teams
- Design and run rigorous evaluations measuring the quality of our AI-generated outputs in order to ensure they meet the high standards expected by top-tier legal professionals.
- Review and validate product outputs for accuracy, relevance, comprehensiveness, helpfulness, etc.
- Collaborate closely with the engineering and GTM teams to identify performance gaps, diagnose their causes, and develop solutions.
- Serve as the legal voice of quality, advocating for precision, consistency, and clarity in AI outputs.
- Bridge technical teams and legal domain expertise, translating legal concepts into product requirements and product concepts back into legal terms.
- Act as the bridge between technical teams and legal domain expertise, translating complex legal concepts into clear product requirements and vice versa.
- Provide domain-specific legal expertise that guides feature development and product roadmap decisions.
- Ideate new products based on a deep understanding of legal teams' pain points.
- Law degree and license to practice law in a U.S. jurisdiction.
- 5+ years of legal experience, with meaningful in-house experience required.
- Substantive depth in one or more areas of in-house legal work, such as corporate-commercial or transactional law, contract drafting and negotiation, product or regulatory counseling, privacy, compliance, employment, fintech or litigation work.
- Experience using generative AI for legal work and evaluating generative AI outputs.
- Strong analytical skills, including the ability to design metrics, interpret evaluation results, and turn legal reasoning into logical, repeatable steps.
- Strong cross-functional communication skills, with the ability to work closely with Engineering, Product, and GTM teams.
- You are already a GC AI user.
- You are nerdy about legal tech, especially prompt engineering and quality assurance.
- You care about user experience, especially how legal professionals interact with and trust AI assistants.
- You have worked closely with software engineers before.
- Ability to design and interpret evaluation metrics and to abstract legal reasoning and processes into logical, repeatable steps.

Compensation
GC AI's compensation package includes a competitive base salary benchmarked against real-time market data, as well as meaningful equity and excellent benefits for all full-time roles.
US-based compensation range for this role: $150,000 - $240,000.
Canadian-based compensation range for this role: CAD $165,000 - CAD $260,000.
This range spans multiple levels. Final compensation will vary based on leveling, market conditions, geographic location, and candidate qualifications, including relevant knowledge, skills, and experience assessed during the interview process.
These compensation bands are just the starting point. After someone joins and proves they’re an exceptional performer, we adjust quickly to ensure their compensation aligns with their impact.
