POSITION SUMMARY:

Marathon Petroleum Company's Galveston Bay Refinery in Texas City, TX currently has a vacancy for a Process Control Engineer.

The Process Control Engineer will be providing operating unit support and ensuring optimal system performance of the site’s Controls Systems. Additional duties include Controls systems lifecycle management, systems improvement, and optimization. They will ensure reliability and function of process control systems and applications. This includes confirming that data and work processes are kept up to date and applications/hardware are running as intended.

The Process Control Engineer will collaborate with partners and customers to communicate, schedule, and execute updates. They also document, communicate, provide training, and work through issues, changes, notices, and impacts to customers. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Hardware and Software 

  • Monitor System performance, evaluate and act on system alarms to correct problems. 

  • Develop and maintain Preventative Maintenance (PM) procedures for equipment and maintain completed documentation. 

  • Coordinate third party contractors and vendor work on equipment. 

  • Lead for Management of Change (MOC) on system hardware and software changes. 

  • Own system failure metrics (hardware and software), update problem reporting database. 

  • Coordinate risk reduction efforts to improve system reliability and availability  

  • Project support Lead for hardware refreshes and perform software version updates. 

  • Develop multi-year plan for system migrations. 

  • Troubleshoot and devise solutions for Controls system issues. 

  • Create SAP requisitions for purchases. 

Process Control Management 

  • Maintain Process Control Key (security) database. 

  • Update data historian. 

  • Trained in site incident investigation management tool. 

  • Lead hardware related incident investigations. 

  • Participate in incident investigations for assigned units as requested. 

Small and Large CAPEX Project Roles 

  • Participate in project design, FAT, SAT, and implementation of new hardware/software. 

  • Lead for design, testing and implementation of changes to existing or new hardware/software. 

Application Support 

  • Provide ongoing technical support for applications and software to Operations and Process Control. 

  • Improve work practices to streamline data to the end user and minimize user error or systems customization. 

  • Provide application training for Process Control and develop materials for Operator training. 

  • Monitor and evaluate applications & system performance; recommend actions to bring performance to acceptable levels, including evaluating emerging technologies and 3rd party applications. 

  • Coordinate with vendors and customers on application changes, including patching and upgrades. 

  • Understand and communicate software version changes and impact to users, including vendor product alerts and notification. 

  • Develop site specific standards for applications.  

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:  

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical, or Computer Engineering required ).  (Education must be obtained/completed prior to start date)

  • Zero (0) years or more of experience in process control engineering within refining, petrochemical, or related industries required.

  • Self-motivated with strong analytical and problem-solving skills, excellent communication skills (written & verbal), and strong collaboration skills. 

  • Ability to work extended hours, on occasion, including nights and weekends in process operations environment and during periods of inclement weather. 

  • Ability to access areas of the refinery requiring use of stairs and/or ladders to inspect equipment. 

  • Ability to maintain on-call status and respond to emergencies as necessary during off-hours. 

  • Ability to travel up to 10%. 

  • A valid Driver’s License is required upon hire.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE/SKILLS: 

  • Five (5) years or more working with an Industrial Control System on a process control, instrument/electrical, or an Operations Technology team within a refining/petrochemical plant or similar manufacturing environment.

  • Honeywell: Experion & TPS/TDC,  
  • Emerson: Ovation, DeltaV  
  • GE: Mark VI 
  • PLC Maintenance, Logic, Troubleshooting, Communications 
  • Safety Instrumented System (SIS) Maintenance (Triconex), Troubleshooting, Communications 
  • Controls systems asset management – ex. PAS Integrity/DOC4000 
  • Historian Applications: Honeywell PHD / OSI Soft Pi System
