About the Role

Otto Aviation is seeking a dynamic engineer to join our Aircraft Integration Team. The ideal candidate will have a background in performing systems safety analyses throughout the lifecycle of an aircraft development program.  You will be joining a team developing the world’s most efficient aircraft. Otto Aviation is seeking first principles engineers that work great in a team atmosphere and know how to get things done. 

What You'll Do

  • Be a functioning team member within Otto’s Aircraft Integration Team. 
  • Define Systems Safety processes, policies, procedures, and necessary software solutions. 
  • Develop Functional Hazard Assessments (FHA), Failure Modes, Effects and Criticality Analyses (FMECA), Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), Hazard Reports, reliability analysis, etc. and mitigation plans. 
  • Assess engineering documents, data, and artifacts to ensure component and system level safety compliance; identify and mitigate potential and existing hazards. 
  • Coordinate directly with system owners to identify areas of opportunity for design improvements, minimize risk to people and property, and ensure that all aspects of system safety are addressed and communicated throughout the program. 
  • Plan, define, and verify system safety requirements and develop safety analysis artifacts to ensure design integrity and safety. 
  • Establish safety tools and procedures to ensure compliance and efficiency for production process planning and optimization. 
  • Perform and participate in trade studies to influence key aircraft decisions. 
  • Give regular presentations showing findings, updates, and systems safety inputs. 

Who You Are

  • B.S. in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, or equivalent. 
  • Minimum 5-7 years of dedicated systems safety aerospace experience.  
  • Familiarity with the civil safety process defined in Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) ARP-4761 and ARP-4754 and/or defense safety process defined in MIL-STD-882. 
  • Direct experience in SAE ARP4761 analyses: Aircraft and System Functional Hazard Assessments (AFHA/SFHAs), Aircraft and System Safety Assessment (PASA, PSSA. ASA, SSA), Particular Risk Analysis (PRA), Zonal Safety Analysis (ZSA), Common Mode Analysis (CMA) 
  • Direct Experience in MIL-STD-882 analyses: Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), Operational & Support Hazard Analysis (O&SHA), Health Hazard Analysis (HHA), System /Subsystem Hazard Analysis (SHA/SSHA), Hazardous Materials, Failure Modes and Effects Criticality Analyses (FMECA), Safety Assessment Report (SAR) 
  • Basic skills in CATIA V5/V6/3DX (or similar); 3DX is preferred. 
  • Strong organizational skills. 
  • Overall knowledge of mechanical systems, propulsion, structures, avionics, and key interfaces to aircraft systems common on Part 23 / Part 25 aircraft. 
  • Knowledge of industry standards with hands-on experience. 
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Basic understanding of Product Lifecycle Management processes. 
  • Familiarity with FAR Part 23 and/or Part 25 relevant engineering and safety requirements.

  • Ability to work with domestic/international suppliers/partners effectively. 

Where You'll Be

Otto Aviation is currently a remote workplace culture, with plans to secure a permanent headquarters for our corporate office in the next 2-3 years. 

This position is a remote job that can be worked anywhere in the United States.
