About Starboard

Starboard is building the default agentic OS for global trade. We write software to help freight forwarders. If you don’t know what a freight forwarder is – no worries, we will teach you! In short, they are responsible for logistics of moving physical things across the planet. It's an underserved market, ripe for disruption with AI. Our software ingests complex rate sheets (pricing for moving shipping containers, air cargo, trucking) and uses agentic and deterministic programming to accurately store these rates in a structured database. Our software then helps the forwarders quote rapidly. We have agents that operate directly from the freight forwarders email inbox, and a web-app. Our stack is PostgreSQL & PostGIS, Next.js (frontend), Python (backend, agents), Golang (API).

Our vision is to build the automated global marketplace for freight. We’re expanding our core systems to support massive scale: many autonomous agents operating safely, deterministically, and in real time across global logistics workflows. If you want to build foundational systems, not just features, this is the role for you.

We’ve raised over $5.5M from top investors in SF and Toronto including Eclipse Capital, Garuda Ventures, OTPP and Everywhere Ventures and are HQ’d in Toronto and NY.

The Role

We’re looking for a Full Stack Engineer with a backend/platform bias to help design and build Starboard’s core infrastructure.

We need you to jump in with both feet. This is a startup, and the job description won’t always match the job. You’ll sit at the intersection of distributed systems, cloud infrastructure, and AI-enabled platforms, owning the systems that serve as the source of truth for our agents. This is a high-ownership, high-impact role working closely with the founding team and AI engineers.

We value speed over syntax. We practice high level architecture and agent based coding. You’ll be able to use Claude, Codex, Copilot on the job and in the interview, and will be judged on the system you design, not how you program it.

In this role you will:

  • Build and operate Starboard’s core platform and cloud infrastructure powering real-time, agent-driven trade workflows.

  • Design and own high-scale CRUD systems and APIs for rates, quotes, shipments, customers, and marketplace data.

  • Build event-driven systems and deterministic interfaces that allow autonomous agents to read/write state safely and reliably.

  • Architect for performance, reliability, and observability (milliseconds matter).

  • Partner closely with AI engineers and founders to translate complex logistics workflows into clean system models.

  • Take end-to-end ownership of foundational systems and raise the technical bar as the team scales.

Why You Should Join Us

  • Build the foundational AI infrastructure for one of the largest critical industries in the world ($2T+ global trade).

  • Work directly with deeply invested founders and a lightning-fast engineering culture.

  • Ship products that immediately touch real revenue with global customers.

  • Solve unstructured, messy real-world problems at massive scale.

  • Competitive compensation and equity ownership in a company redefining how global trade operates.

Qualifications

  • Experience in backend, platform, or infrastructure engineering

  • Strong experience with TypeScript/Node, Python, Go, or similar

  • Solid understanding of cloud infrastructure, containers, and orchestration

  • Experience designing and operating high-scale CRUD systems

  • Hands-on experience with event-driven or distributed systems

  • Strong data modeling instincts - you can move fast without breaking integrity

  • High ownership mindset; comfortable operating in ambiguity

  • Curious, pragmatic, and impact-driven - you go where the leverage is

Nice to Haves:

  • Experience in B2B SaaS logistics, marketplaces, fintech, or other complex domains

  • Exposure to agent frameworks, LLM-driven systems, or AI infrastructure

  • Experience optimizing performance-sensitive or compute-heavy workloads

  • Early-stage startup experience is an asset

Benefits

  • Compensation: $180,000 - $240,000 [base + bonus], 0.25-0.75% equity

  • Daily paid lunches in office

  • Company provided laptop and equipment

What you need to know about the Austin Tech Scene

Austin has a diverse and thriving tech ecosystem thanks to home-grown companies like Dell and major campuses for IBM, AMD and Apple. The state’s flagship university, the University of Texas at Austin, is known for its engineering school, and the city is known for its annual South by Southwest tech and media conference. Austin’s tech scene spans many verticals, but it’s particularly known for hardware, including semiconductors, as well as AI, biotechnology and cloud computing. And its food and music scene, low taxes and favorable climate has made the city a destination for tech workers from across the country.

Key Facts About Austin Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 180,500; 13.7% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Dell, IBM, AMD, Apple, Alphabet
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, hardware, cloud computing, software, healthtech
  • Funding Landscape: $4.5 billion in VC funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Live Oak Ventures, Austin Ventures, Hinge Capital, Gigafund, KdT Ventures, Next Coast Ventures, Silverton Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: University of Texas, Southwestern University, Texas State University, Center for Complex Quantum Systems, Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences, Texas Advanced Computing Center
