Job Description

We are seeking an experienced Senior MongoDB Database Platform Engineer to join the Database Engineering team and help build, operate, and modernize our enterprise MongoDB platform. This role will be responsible for the design, implementation, automation, security, performance, high availability, backup and recovery, and operational support of MongoDB environments spanning on-premises infrastructure and MongoDB Atlas Platform as a Service (PaaS).
The ideal candidate will have deep MongoDB expertise, strong Linux administration skills, hands-on experience with replica sets, sharded clusters, high availability and disaster recovery, and the ability to partner effectively with application, infrastructure, security, SRE, network, and cloud engineering teams.

MongoDB Platform Engineering

·    Design, build, deploy, administer, and support enterprise MongoDB environments across production and non-production landscapes, including on-premises deployments and MongoDB Atlas PaaS.

·    Lead MongoDB installation, configuration, patching, version upgrades, migrations, and lifecycle management activities.

·    Design and operate MongoDB replica sets and sharded clusters, including appropriate topology, storage, networking, and capacity configurations.

·    Define and maintain MongoDB engineering standards, reference architectures, build procedures, operational controls, and best practices.

·    Participate in architecture reviews and advise application teams on data modeling, indexing, scalability, resilience, connectivity, and operational readiness.

High Availability and Disaster Recovery

·    Design and support highly available MongoDB solutions using replica sets, elections, read preferences, write concerns, and multi-site or multi-region architectures.

·    Implement and maintain disaster-recovery strategies for both on-premises MongoDB and MongoDB Atlas deployments.

·    Plan and execute failover, recovery, regional resiliency, and disaster-recovery tests.

·    Work with stakeholders to define, validate, and maintain recovery time and recovery point objectives.

Backup and Recovery

·    Design, implement, and operate enterprise MongoDB backup and recovery solutions for on-premises and MongoDB Atlas environments.

·    Administer snapshot, continuous backup, point-in-time recovery, retention, restore, and recovery-validation processes using MongoDB-native and enterprise tooling.

·    Conduct regular restore testing and support disaster-recovery exercises to verify recoverability.

Performance and Reliability

·    Monitor database availability, capacity, health, replication, storage, and performance across on-premises and MongoDB Atlas environments.

·    Analyze and optimize queries, indexes, aggregation pipelines, schema and data models, connection behavior, and database configurations.

·    Troubleshoot complex production incidents, lead root-cause analysis, and implement preventive actions.

·    Drive database reliability, observability, capacity planning, and operational excellence initiatives.

Security and Compliance

·    Implement MongoDB security controls, access-management standards, and least-privilege practices.

·    Manage roles and privileges, authentication, authorization, encryption in transit and at rest, auditing, key management, and credential-management integrations.

·    Configure and support Atlas security capabilities, including private connectivity, network access controls, identity integration, and organizational access governance.

·    Support compliance reviews, vulnerability remediation, security assessments, and evidence requests.

Automation and DevOps

·    Develop automation for MongoDB provisioning, configuration, deployment, patching, validation, monitoring, and routine operations.

·    Use Infrastructure as Code, configuration management, source control, APIs, and CI/CD practices to improve consistency and repeatability.

·    Partner with engineering teams to expand safe self-service capabilities and reduce manual operational effort.

Platform Operations and Technical Leadership

·    Provide support for mission-critical production and non-production MongoDB environments across on-premises and MongoDB Atlas PaaS.

·    Participate in on-call rotations, major incident response, change management, and problem management.

·    Create and maintain runbooks, troubleshooting guides, standards, architectural documentation, and operational procedures.

·    Mentor engineers, review technical solutions, and provide technical leadership for MongoDB platform initiatives.

Required Qualifications

·    10+ years of database administration, database engineering, or data-platform engineering experience.

·    8+ years of hands-on MongoDB administration and engineering experience supporting mission-critical production environments.

·    Strong Linux administration experience; RHEL or a comparable enterprise Linux distribution is preferred.

·    Deep understanding of MongoDB architecture, storage engine behavior, replication, sharding, configuration, security, maintenance, and performance tuning.

·    Hands-on experience with MongoDB replica sets, sharded clusters, high availability, disaster recovery, backup and recovery, point-in-time recovery, and capacity planning.

·    Hands-on experience administering or engineering MongoDB Atlas, including cluster deployment, scaling, backup, monitoring, networking, access management, and migration activities.

·    Strong skills in MongoDB query analysis, indexing, aggregation pipelines, schema and data modeling, and workload optimization.

·    Proven ability to troubleshoot complex database, operating system, storage, network, and connectivity issues in production environments.

·    Experience planning and executing database upgrades, migrations, patching, platform changes, and production releases.

·    Ability to communicate clearly with technical and non-technical stakeholders and work effectively across organizational boundaries.

Preferred Qualifications

·    Experience with MongoDB Enterprise Advanced and MongoDB Ops Manager for on-premises database lifecycle management, monitoring, backup, and automation.

·    Experience designing or operating hybrid MongoDB platforms spanning on-premises environments and MongoDB Atlas across Microsoft Azure, Amazon Web Services, or Google Cloud Platform.

·    Experience with MongoDB migration and synchronization tooling such as mongodump/mongorestore, MongoDB Database Tools, Atlas Live Migration, or MongoDB Relational Migrator.

·    Experience with observability platforms such as Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk, or native MongoDB and Atlas monitoring capabilities.

·    Experience with Infrastructure as Code and delivery tools such as Terraform, GitHub, GitLab, or CI/CD pipelines.

·    Nice to have: hands-on experience using Ansible to automate MongoDB installation, configuration, patching, validation, and repeatable operational tasks.

·    Exposure to other database technologies such as PostgreSQL, Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, or Neo4j.

·    Experience leading technical initiatives, mentoring team members, and influencing enterprise platform standards.

Desired Attributes

·    Strong ownership, accountability, and customer focus.

·    Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.

·    Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and drive technical initiatives to completion.

·    Strong collaboration, documentation, and communication skills.

·    Experience working in large-scale, highly available, and regulated enterprise environments.
